British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Tennis

Found this article, with a good write-up, player profiles etc.

Must admit, I'd lost track of some of those players having not seen there names on entry lists recently (not Maia and Jack of course !)

Having looked at some of the courses and institutions these guys are at you can see why they havent been quite as active on the futures/British tour scene. The players that have Maia being the exception have graduated and I presume squeeze in because they graduated sometime in the proceeding 18 months? Chemistry at Bath, Economics and Finance at Sussex will definitely require a bit of book work. Two of the girls are physios and although likely to have a very sympathetic course co-ordinator it still requires a significant amount of time face to face with patients. Some pretty robust plan Bs in place there which is very healthy.

Although even at representative level I dont see it really as a way into pro tennis as yet, hopefully Maia and Jack will prove me wrong but the team strength here is probably consistent with mid table power conference inter collegiate tennis team in the US perhaps making the NCAA tournament. It would be good to see it grow and undoubtedly this group will get a great deal out of this event and that alone will inspire those behind them to want to be involved.

I do get a sense of intrinsic growth in the depth and quality of UK College tennis indeed it would be nice to see a bit more competition at the representative level perhaps a rep team in the two annual county tournaments or a rep fixture against the winners of county week at Wimbledon in the second week, perhaps even bulk out finals day ie. Build an opportunity to showcase the best UK based student talent into our slam in the way in which the USTA have done with the US open and their invitational tournament.

Yes, there are some really decent courses in there.

Mind you, if Harriet is completing her Open University Psychology degree, that's an equally serious, time-consuming course (am constantly impressed with the standard of the Open University against many of the other unis I see regularly).

Several top French players completed degrees while playing too - there's certainly time to do both at the same time.

Of course, to represent GB here you don;t have to be a student in the UK. We've had several US college players on our different university teams.

(Salas is actually at Florida State now, not in France).

Like the idea of the top uni team in County week (although wouldn't that risk decimating those county teams that the players play for?)

As regards GB's 'stunning' comeback, (their word ), there's a super short article:

"DAY 1 GB stage brilliant comeback to defeat hosts France

Good/bad  to see Amy Bowtell there. She is a lot better than that.
