At least we got one through, though arguably the one less expected to progress:

L96:  (Q) Liam Broady WR 169 defeated (Q) Bjorn Fratangelo (USA) WR 109 by 7-6(5) 6-3

*****

L48:  (22) Filip Krajinovic (SRB) WR 27 (= CH) vs (Q) Liam Broady WR 169

And after a very long rally on match point, he's done it !!!

Liam breaks and goes into the 2nd round 7-6 (5) 6-3

Couldnt be happier for Liam, he got given an opportunity and hes taken it.

That said, I thought it said it all how muted he was at the end - he knew he hadnt played a good match there but the Frat beat himself. He can go out there against Krajinovic with absolutely nothing to lose and will probably play a lot better!

A friend needs to set up an intervention.

Yes not the best match Ive ever seen but really well done Liam. He hung in brilliantly and got over the line. His best tennis was definitely better than Fratangelos and a well deserved win. Good luck in R2! Is this a new career high??

Also watched Cam earlier. Have to say I was a bit disappointed with his performance - felt he got out-muscled and over powered and he will need to do something about his serve. I hope I am wrong but Vandys prediction of top 30 this year looks a bit of a stretch at the moment - I think he will be doing well if he gets to around 75 this year. Thats not to say top 30 isnt impossible longer term.

My post about Cam seems to have been lost in eternity...

As I said it was all on Jarrys racket. That lad has the potential to be the next Isner. A complete serve bot with a huge forey.

That said, a lot of the time I disagree with Petch and think he latched on to something too much - but Cam really really needs to sort out that serveof his. You cant afford to be doing that on hard courts.

Im gonna tip Cam to have a very good clay court season, it should suit his game to a tee.

Be interesting to watch Jarry's progress. To be fair seagull got in first with an "on Jarry's racket" comment but certainly agreement

I don't rush to watch serve bots and a meeting of two is to me a bit of a borefest. But neither do I denigrate them like occasionally some do. Making the best of such a weapon to compensate for other weaker areas is just good sense and no doubt often born out of a huge amount of practice.

Top 75 would be good progress for Cam this year and I see that as certainly achievable.

Question for cam is where will he play on clay? His ranking is too low to get into ATP main draws so will he try and qualify or play Challenger circuit across Europe. I actually feel qualies might work best, the Challenger draws will be full of clay specialists whereas main ATP draws could throw up some higher ranked guys less strong on clay.

Edit - indeed, he is entered in Houston qualies as a starter for ten on the main tour

...and he is also on the alts list for Barcelona so it looks like Cam is aiming at playing qualies across the main clay tour rather than Challengers

Yes, Liam is up to 153 in the live rankings now, which takes out his previous CH of 158. He has nothing much coming off for a while either, so can now focus on getting well inside the top 150 in the coming few months.

It will be interesting to see if Liam goes for a clay spring which may be good for his game but not gather many points for rankings or whether hard courts are his thing, those two new challengers being ideal for him if he'd like to focus on points and raising his ranking?

Brilliant news to wake up to this morning. Into the 2nd round of a Masters is an achievement in itself. Points wise, it is not as much as being a losing finalist in a Challenger but you don't get 25k dollars for that.

Nothing to lose in R2. Go in as the underdog and give it everything. You never know what can happen.
