Property developers and the death of non league football clubs

You can follow Nunhead FC on Twitter, still linked with Hamlet the account shares information about the history of the club which was a big part of the community in SE London up to the 50s and raises money for youth orientated events, the team original evolved from a working boys home.,

It is supported by like minded Dulwich fans who enjoy exploring Dulwichs history, Nunheads and Hamlets history being tightly linked and very influential in the thriving world of amateur football in the SE right up to the Second World War. Nunhead v Hamlet was our annual Boxing Day fixture! Indeed even Christmas Eve, now that sounds perfect!!

Much more on social media

Some cracking FA Vase Cup ties this weekend for the step 5 aficionados out there. Stowmarket Town are the favourites (up against one of 4 SCEFL sides in the last 32). Shockingly generous odds available on Chatham Town given the strength of the league and how well they are playing. If I had been to Weymouth before I would probably go to their game against another strong SECFL side, the amateurs at Corinthian. Should be a corker and a decent crowd (900 + on Boxing Day @ step 5!!!)

I plan to ride the rails this weekend family commitments permitting to get to Worcester City v Coventry United (who probably have the best stand in EFL 2 let alone step 5 but no others!) on Sunday but probably pushing my luck given Weymouth on Saturday.

Worcester play at Bromsgrove.
I think you are getting carried away about their stand...

Dont go to the wrong place Oakland!

Harrogate are away to level 5 Darlington, big ground and perhaps a decent crowd. I'd like to see town have a decent run but suspect with the league the target we will rest a large number of players

I have had the good fortune to go to the real Victoria Ground Bromsgrove on many occasions (when they were plain old Rovers!) and made a special trip to watch City there last season midweek against another Coventry side Coventry Sphinx after a walk over the Malverns, a stunningly beautiful day made the 300 mile round trip and 1-0 loss more tolerable. I have my 1957 FA Cup replica shirt ironed and ready to go for Sunday!

Coventry United have one of the more amazing stadiums in non league, the Butts ground which has one massive stand that holds 3000 seats, nothing else! Only an East Stand. You only need 500 to play in the national league. They share the ground with Cov Bears Rugby League!

Hope you all enjoy your footie this weekend.

Thank goodness I reconsidered trip no 2. Worcester have already lost a few games as the drainage at Bromsgrove could be better, the ground was wet with more rain overnight, given its a good 3 hrs each way with a pitch inspection at 11:30 i decided not to go. Its been put back to Wednesday but not that optimistic the ground will have dried out.

Weymouth was well worth the trip on Saturday mind. The best non league ground I have been to, friendly fans and a decent match. Even got a point!! Their stadium although modern despite showing a bit of wear definitely fit for EFL 2, the lights may need sorting but a good sized ground that could easily take 6K with everyone getting a view.

Town beat Darlington 2-0 with half the team rested and are now into last 16 of Trophy. Draw tomorrow

And Town draw a home tie with Eastleigh, same league at Town but in the lower reaches of the table. Home tie as well, Harrogate should be hoping to win this one.

We made the trip up to Fylde and we got hammered for the 5th game in a row.
18 million pounds to build their ground and facilities in a tiny village. They have a restaurant, massive sports bar, executive boxes on a big complex with a KFC, Aldi and industrial businesses.
Three sides of the ground are terrific, with a flat uncovered area behind the home goal.....
They are being bankrolled by 300-400k per year as they have no fan base and are surrounded by Preston, Blackpool and Fylde.

They will do a Rushden and go bust when the owner gets fed up.

I see Flyde are about to loose their prolific centre forward. Big contrast to Worcester population 101k and no team if at step 5 level in the City. Loads of work to do to get them back to Worcester but at least we have a ground complements of the Worcester FA and the council now seem keen to facilitate developing it.... just need stands etc...

Big game is now scheduled for Wednesday night remote possibility I might go if I can shift plenty of work tomorrow.

Guernsey are getting great crowds for step 4, regularly close to or touching a K.

I get your point re viability. My bit of SE London is getting a bit crowded. Welling and Dartford at Step 2, may well lose a few fans to Cray Wanderers at their new ground round the corner in Step 3, well sited off the A20 with play off potential. Glebe step 5 are no more than 800m from Cray Wanders and CVPM (step 4) 3 miles up the road at the other end of Eltham. Edith and Belvedere share with Welling (step 6). Only Dartford break 1K regularly. Without the sugar daddies thinks could easily go pearshaped.

As long as they spend within their means, it's not an issue.
East Manchester has a similar issue - FC United, Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley, Droylsden, Ashton Utd, Curzon Ashton all within 5-10 miles of each other

Decided to join you tennis forum local football hipsters by attending Tividale vs Wolves Academy in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup. Tividale play in the Midland Premier League (not sure what step that is). Wolves completely dominated and won 6-0, helped by a few howlers from the Tivi keeper. The highlight was a 35 yarder into the top corner by centre half Dion Sanderson.

Tividale are step 5, same league as the mighty Worcester City! So there will be 16 leagues across the country at this level when the reshuffles finally sort themselves out. Step 4 is where they really struggled big difference going down to 8 regional leagues, number of players able to cope with pace of game reduced dramatically but tough to get out of step 5 as usually only one club goes up, normally best of that step by some difference.

Beautifully made little documentary https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/news/beeches-tividale-fc about the club in step 6 last season.

Sums up what step 5 football should be all about, although the quality of and effort put into what goes on on the pitch at this level isnt really covered.

I would agree that they are about as super cool as you can get in the Black Country. You can see the ships at Dudley port from the ground

Unfortunately I didn't see their ground as it was played at Sporting Khalsa, presumably because this cup tie had already postponed twice due to waterlog and they moved it to Khalsa's artificial pitch as it really needed to get done. This proved a wise choice as it pissed it down all day which would have surely meant another postponement.

Tividale looks a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon in the future perhaps when Wolves are on Sky a Sunday or a Monday night, you could probably squeeze a trip in when Wolves are @ home in the early or late Saturday games. Remember that? Saturday afternoon football.

Love the documentary, beautifully shot, great audio, really representative of the enormous work volunteers put into non league football, everybody doing something to get the match on and keep the club ticking over. Obviously got the sports scientist in to plan the half time snack selection.

No plastic pitch at Bromsgrove but last nights Vase game went on and Worcester won!!! 452 for an OUT OF TOWN WEDNESDAY Night (Bromsgrove is 13 miles from Worcester) step 5 game is absolutely cracking!!! Things were looking shakey in the afternoon but they got it on.

Generally dont see Vase gates like that until QFs. Cray Valley Papermill got 700 for home SF on a Sunday & nothing else was on in SE London.

Next up step 6 Atherstone Town (beat Malvern in an earlier round 10-0!!) Their Sheppy Rd ground has a capacity of 3.5K. Worryingly the council have approved planning permission for 44 houses.

Worcester could really do with a good Vase run bit like Canterbury City last year (Now really struggling!) to raise the clubs profile in the town they represent and hopefully will go back too in August for 2020/21 season. Lights Out last fan out of Worcester on the 8th of Feb.
