Week 10 - ITF ($25K) - Yokohama, Japan - Hard

From Champion last week, half way around the world, and into qualifying...

QR1: Harriet DART (GBR) [q1] 301 v. Kumi SO (JPN) 786 (=CH)
Ms. So has been a SF/F performer at $15K over the last year, without managing a title.

That's unlucky. Listed as Q1 on the acceptance list right now, with Glushko at 20 in the main draw list, now with a lower ranking than Harriet.
Maybe the following week (although she is still at q5 in the listing there)

Laura's main draw match up is out, but Harriet will have to wait until tomorrow to be placed as the qualifying matches were not concluded today - presumably weather interruption. Laura and Harriet are also both in the doubles draw with separate partners. Laura plays her L32 match tomorrow.

L32: Laura ROBSON (GBR) [5] 218 vs Julia GLUSHKO (ISR) 307 (CH:79 June 14)

Laura has to start winning these or she will just stay around the mid 200- 300 mark. Difficult or not, any opponent is difficult for Laura at the moment.

Glushko is the lowest ranked player among the DAs; Laura has also drawn the lowest ranked possible opponent for the QFs, seed 4; in the lower half where the best she could hope for is that the remaining seeds would be 2 and 8; which is what she's got.

If Laura wants to make the top 100 she should be winning this sort of event week in, week out.

I just don't see it.

Good to see Harriet making short work of the FQR :D

Laura's R1 opponent has been top 100 in the past so potentially tricky; but yes Laura needs to start winning these encounters and, indeed, tournaments for fun soon if she's ever going to get back to anywhere near where she was. Here's hoping :)

I think we should treat Laura based on her current ranking, not her past, and I would hope she deploys the same thinking.

Where Glushko trounced the number 1 seed in October, and beat Parmentier earlier this year, it's not an easy draw, but winnable. Good luck Laura :)
