That's a good effort by Molloy. I probably should but don't know him. What's his background?

 Someone will probably tell you better but all I know is that Jack was a junior last year, got to be JWR 80, and went off to college in the states (in California, I think) this year.

(His was the one match that I never got to see at Roehampton so have never seen the guy, although I think he's London based)

Jack has had a great start to college tennis at Cal qualifying for the fall national tournament and playing no 3 as a freshman, he is obviously giving it his all from the get go. Great result in one of his local tournaments.

Not so sure I like the concept of 18 year olds amateur players ending up on drips.

They are young adults who are very keen to play but one could argue that his college team has a responsibility to protect their players from dehydration as it is predictable, if the conditions are unplayable without players becoming dehydrated they shouldnt play, the alternative is he is being rehydrated to get back as quickly as possible which again worries me a bit. Drips should be reserved for the emergency room.

Again, not a bad effort for Jack. Based on admittedly two results and beating a player ranked just outside top 1000 and then a tight first set v one just outside the top 400, Jack seems to be playing at maybe top 700/800 level or even top 600?

Very well done to Jack but as you say just two results and we don't know how close these opponents were playing to their rankings level ( not just our players can be very variable ). Looks quite promising on the face of it though.

 Probably right Topemp - just going with the hyperbole of the Davis Cup weekend but yes, probably a leap of imagination going on there for me. Heh ho.

He has done really well in the Cal squad out performing their whole crop of highly talented quality freshman, qualifying for the fall national championship in his first term in college Tennis arguably makes his the best start to college since Cam.

Not at all suprised by his results here. He will get more opportunities locally re futures and challengers, Cal is arguably a stronger programme than TCU plenty of depth for day to day practice and he standing out as a fresher. The mens tennis coaching position has just received an anonymous endowment of the head Tennis coaching position (I think of 3 million dollars) allowing the storied head coach of 20 years to move upstairs, expertease he would find very hard to buy if he were starting out on the futures tour.

Japanese superstar? Ben McLachlan is a graduate who featured in the AO doubles semi final this year, most of last years seniors who did well over the last 4 years are hitting the futures and challenger tour. Jack has grasped his opportunities straight away to be a leader and I cant think of many nicer places to spend the next 4 years than playing tennis just below the labs that split the atom in Berkeley
