That was strange from Jo. She fell over twice, missed the ball on a smash and then mi**** the smash completely on the last match point. Was her serve so slow because she was trying to combat the wind? Because Pella didn't seem to be slowing her serve down? Also her backhand was a bit of a hot mess but such is life. Credit to Pella for getting the win but I don't think she played lights out tennis and Jo playing at the level she did against Brengle would have won this.

Does anyone know where she falls to in the rankings now? Miami is gunna be very pressurised for her. Hope she doesn't fallback into her old panicky ways.

Not the best tournament for the ladies but very generous of them to rest themselves for the fed cup.

I thought Jo looked incredibly fraught throughout that match. Serve didnt seem to work well, some very poor shot selection. Too many mistakes. Pera was impressive, solid and powerful and dealt with the wind much better. Again, Im hoping Jo can add more to her game. She also needs to revisit the mental side, you can tell there is a lot of insecurity underneath the surface and that is coming through more often. I fear that shell drop further down the rankings before things get better but Im also sure shell be able to bounce back.

I wonder why Jo wasn't hitting the angles that proved so effective against Brengle. The wind was certainly worrying her but when she played the angles she often won the point. Maybe she was just finding it hard to read the ball and lost confidence in her usual shots.

Oh dear. I read mention of the wind, but was the apparent extreme heat a factor? She said in her on court interview after her R1 win that she liked it hot, but I am sure I have memories of her not playing well and looking frazzled in a previous very hot match. I guess she wasn't going to say that she wasn't looking forward to it.

Re post Australian Open rankings I believe she is still for now WR 10 though level on points with Georges and I'm not absolutely sure about that tiebreaker position. Mladenovic is up to #9 though Kiki will soon have to start actually winning matches, but Vandeweghe will drop down with her SF points from last year dropping off. There is as things stand for now over 1300 points between #8 Venus and #9 Kiki with Jo now back much more with the mix behind. Anyone remaining would have to reach at least the SF to overtake Jo with two for whom a SF spot would suffice being Kerber and Barty.

Having seen bits of that match last night I was disappointed that Jo could not mix it up more. She doesn't slice the ball at all, and seems just to go for her shots all the time. In the last game of the first set when Pera was serving and could be expected to have nerves, the commentator said Jo has to make her play the ball here - and Jo then promptly hit two shots out going for shots where she could easily have kept the ball in play going for less. Her absence of any kind of plan b or variation in her play I do find worrying, in amongst the points others have made about her current relative mental strength.

I don't follow womens tennis much at all apart from looking for scores etc. So I am writing this blind. Jo seemed to make a really quick rise up the ranks having been known for her mental weakness, from what I understand, and then got people around her who helped her solve that, become more solid and confident mentally and in her game and she took off.

Those folks seem to have left her (one sadly passed away) and she seems to be going through a bad patch. It strikes me this is all mental with Jo, the worry is that she won't ever get it back and will drop to the levels she rose up from. But if it is mental, surely she can remember what she was taught and did and with a bit of help she can get it back? Let's hope so.

She seems happier with Michael Joyce, her new coach, so let's hope so indeed. This is still early days in their coaching/ mentoring relationship.

 I suspect that that that's not too untypical decimation of women's Slam seeds. Though I predict that they won't lose anything like as many seeds by this stage next year 

PS: though actually this year only 6 of the top 16 seeds remain ( seeds 9 to 16 having all departed plus (3) Muguruza and (5) V Williams ).
