I think you have a vivid imagination - unfortunately I can see Laura losing in R1

A shame they couldn't get into the doubles to play together. I was a bit surprised to see them in the draw actually, I feel like they've both played a lot recently... probably just my imagination!

The air quality in Mumbai ( and most Indian cities) is pretty shocking at the moment. Hope these girls wear masks as much as possible. My friends in India report conditions are really bad and damaging to health.

Same opinion as you Wickmayer is really still top 100

Laura was close to beating her in her last match at Australian open before retiring with a wrist injury I seem to remember.  (But I haven't checked any of those assertions)

Edit.  It was Hobart, but other than that, yes, Laura had taken the first set anyway.

This is a note to Steven to insert Naomi and Laura on his tables please.

Thank you for your continued hard work in keeping these so up to date (99.999999% of the time!).

They could certainly have got into the doubles together if they had wanted and indeed would have been seeded. But maybe Naomi particularly wants her full focus on singles this week.

One singles win would make her a net gainer - if she can go further then ..... Good Luck Naomi smile

And indeed at least a couple rounds further would be preferable. I rather think that there is a bigger goal in Naomi's mind than 'merely' a net gain for the week and that that is the Australian Open MD.

In the latest 20/11 rankings she is WR 117 on 545 points with a 16th counter of 13 points. This is effectively the last counting week for the Australuan Open MD cut-off ( rankings of 04/12 ) since nothing above a 15K next week.

With 12 qualifiers and 8 WCs there will be an initial 108 players for the main draw, so up to WR 108 plus possible withdrawals minus possible SRs.

A QF here would add a net 16 points for Naomi, taking her to 561 points, currently equivalent to WR 116, almost certainly not enough.

A SF would add a net 44 points, taking her to 589 points, currently equivalent to WR 109, interesting.

The final would add a net 82 points, taking her to 627 points, currently equivalent to WR 105, better.

The title would add a net 147 points, taking her to 692 points, currently equivalent to WR 98, job done.

Here's hoping Laura fulfills blob's R1 analysis and Naomi can go all the way to Indy's "job done" :)

Laura has had a court change, and been brought forward; now on court.
She's started with a break to love... against. 0-1*
