WTA Finals next venue

Apparently next year is the last in Singapore and the WTA wish to bring the Tour finals to Europe. Prague, St. Petersburg and Manchester are the venues touted.

Personally, living in Yorkshire, Manchester would be very appealing,  presumably the MEN arena is being considered for it. The article was on tennis Czech website.

Here is a link to an article about it

Dated August but first time I'd read it!

We don't seem to have a thread for this year's (because no British interest), but I heard the commentator say that it was Andy Bettles out there on court, coaching Svitolina - so congrats to him - we really should have that coach thread - it's great to see our players rising to the top in different areas of tennis.

[And, just as an aside, well done Caroline (are you happy, Jaggy? Your girl is doing well. Not to mention Sears, Drurie and Sam Smith all saying 'it's amazing how her singles has come on since she decided to ditch the doubles')]

Well done again to Caroline Garcia, she just won't go away !

Lost her first match in straight sets to Halep, lost the first set in a TB to Svitolina before winning 7-5 in the third and lost the first set 0-6 to Wozniacki before winning again 7-5 in the third.

SFs: Ka Pliskova vs Wozniacki and V Williams vs Garcia

Pliskova will go back to WR 1 ahead of Halep and clearly be year end #1 if she wins the title.

interestingly the article talks about possibly increasing the draw to 16 players, presumably as a knockout event? The old mens year end Masters in New York went to 12 and then 16 for a year or two, straight knockout,  but reverted back because it diluted the field in an event which was marketed on the top players playing each day. Nonetheless,  interesting idea

and Wozniacki puts paid to Pliskova and any designs she had on top spot.

And in other news, Martina hingis and partner lose in the doubles semis,  bringing down closure on her career. Ice never really warmed to Hingis but she had a good career and great last comeback in doubles and of course mixed doubles as well.

MEN would be good, but can they get practice courts there as well?

It seems Shenzhen has been awarded a 10 year contract starting next year.

Shenzhen does seem to get a lot of tennis over a variey of levels. Right next door to Hong Kong on the old Chinese side, I guess the climate is about the best going in China.

Also, if true, then both year-end WTA events would be in South-Eastern China, within 40 miles of each other.
Surely the Zhuhai tournament would move? Although, it wouldn't surprise me to see them either scrap it altogether, or somehow amalgamate the two into one, fortnight long, affair in Shenzhen.

WTA going all in on China. I see New Haven has sold its Premier status event just before the US Open to ZhenghZhou which will be played the week after the US Open, not sure if it is in effect this year or next, but yet another tournament going that way. There'll be:

WTA Finals
WTA Elite Trophy
Beijing PM
Wuhan P5
ZhengZhou P
Shenzhen intl
Nanchang
Guangzhou
Tianjin
Hong Kong is technically separate but same time zone, region, language etc.

That's now more events than the USA which has a slam, 2 PMs, P5, 2 P's and an international. I wonder if it's just a matter of time before the Florida HQ moves that way as well.
