Week 37 - ITF ($15K) - Hammamet, Tunisia, Clay

Fran drew the #1 seed in the first round last week and memorably beat her en route to the final. This week she 'only' draws the #6 seed. Emily's points have taken a dip this week as she lost 8 points and 135 places last week, but with her 12 point win yesterday, she will more than replace that in a week's time.

L32: Francesca JONES (GBR) 1085 vs (6) Irina FETECAU (ROU) 653 (CH518 May 17)

L32: Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 902 vs Verena HOFER (ITA) 773

Bit of a wobble for the reigning queen of Hammamet, but re-focused to ensure no harm done, 6-3 2-6 6-1

Fran is impressing again against another seed, 6-4 1-0*

Sadly, the two Brits meet again in the next round

And indeed Fran completed her win against the #6 seed with a very comfortable second set. Impressive again from her, and a good win too for Emily also against a higher ranked player.

L32: Francesca JONES (GBR) 1085 beat (6) Irina FETECAU (ROU) 653 (CH518 May 17) 6-4 6-1

L32: Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 902 beat Verena HOFER (ITA) 773 6-3 2-6 6-1

L16: Francesca JONES (GBR) 1085 vs Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 902

Yes, it's a pity they have to play this early against each other rather than in a final again!

In pitiless form, Emily Arb & Mia won their dubs, 0 & 0.

The all-GB-hyper-clash-grudge-rematch-apalooza seems to be following the same early pattern as the final last Sunday, with Francesca making the early running.
She is the one making the early opportunities (1/9 on BP, versus Emily 0/1), and also being up the early break, *4-3

Edit: gobbledigook

There was a further break a piece, but as on Sunday, Francesca takes the first set, this time 6-4

Fran seemingly well in charge, and serving for the match, 6-4 *5-2

Very comprehensive win by Fran, who looks to have pretty much dominated affairs, 6-4 6-2
Hopefully she can continue and thus replace Emily as the reigning champ in Hammamet.

That would be great. If Fran won the title both her and Emily Arb would be on 26 points on Monday week, likely to be very low 700s.

Amazing win for Fran there, and now 1-1 in their personal stakes over the last couple of weeks. Interesting too that Fran's dominant win came without her serving particularly well - 7DFs and only 47.5% of 1st serves in, but of the first serves she did make she won 76%. At 16 years, and given her injury history, Fran clearly has plenty of potential if she can avoid further major injuries for a while.

It's not injuries, Michael. It's birth malformations of her hands and feet, and palate. (Although they have caused injuries, as well as needing correcting - insofar as possible - in themselves).

Yes, a wonderful win for Fran.

Always great to see a young player turn it around so quickly. Wonder if she came in with a different plan, having played Emily last week? Or just executed better? Or if Emily played worse?
