Battle for the top ( women )

Ostapenko out so Jo will remain 7th in the race unless Vandeweghe, Sevastova or Vesnina win the title.

Svitolina going quietly about her business could end up the most discreet number 1 there has been, almost no coverage of her.

Indeed, I've been thinking the same and almost posted similar.

You'd think she'd be a godsend to the British media there, stuck twiddling their thumbs most of the time, given all these indirect GB links - https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/elina-svitolina-on-how-early-defeat-led-her-to-fall-for-reece-topley-tq0p7t7dn

Excellent that Jo stays in 7th for now...and Vesnina also loses in R3...fingers crossed it stays in her own hands for the run-in smile

If Pliskova ended up beating Muguruza in the final, I think they would have exactly the same points. What would be the tiebreaker?

From the WTA Rules: -
When two (2) or more players have the same number of ranking points, the tie for the ranking position will be decided according to the following priorities:
i. The player with the most combined total points from Grand Slams, Premier Mandatory Tournaments, Premier 5 Tournaments and the WTA Finals;
ii. The player with the most total points from all WTA and Grand Slam Tournaments, including the WTA Finals;
iii. The player with the fewest number of Tournaments in a 52-week period (including any Mandatory Tournaments, if the player qualified for acceptance); and
iv. The highest number of points from one (1) single Tournament, then if needed, the second highest and so on.

I'll let someone else work it out ..........

Thank you the addict and Etienne too for making the point and asking the question.

And the winner based on (i) would conclusively be Garbine.

Based on counting points ( and the few non counters would make practically no difference ) :

Muguruza : 6375 ( points from i ) + 715 ( Premier & International points ) = 7090

Pliskova : 5580 ( points from i ) + 1510 ( Premier points ) = 7090

Pliskova has 3 Premier titles in that 1510 but Muguruza would be top based on Premier 5 upward tournaments.

So to that extent #1 is out of Pliskova's hands. But not out of Svitolina's, who like Muguruza would go WR 1 with the title.

We'll allow Sevastova a further win when it's beating Sharapova !

With Keys beating Svitolina yesterday where once there were 8 in contention at the beginning of the US Open we are down to 2, between the departed live ranked #1 and the live ranked #4 ( and for now still official #1 ), the highest remaining in the live ranks.

G Muguruza : 5790 + 240 = 6030
Ka Pliskova : 5090 + ?

So Pliskova has to reach the final again to retain the top spot.

Jo live ranked #6 can be overtaken by Venus ( if she reaches the SF ) or Kvitova ( if she wins the title ). These two meet in the QF today so both can't happen

In the race she is live #7. Here she can be overtaken by Vandeweghe or Sevastova if either wins the title.

 Just to go slightly off at a tangent here, I'm glad Sharapova is out as well I've never liked her that much even before the cheating.

Brings me to a thought however that would the likes of Serena, Venus or Kvitova as examples have been treated with the same contempt on their comeback as Sharapova has been in the same circumstances? By that I mean popular players on the circuit for both fans and players. I'm kind of thinking they probably wouldn't as much.

So in the battle to avoid being top Muguruza loses out and will be WR1 for the first time.

SF is a great tournament for Vandeweghe so just be happy with that, Coco !

Probably best for Jo that Venus goes on to win the title rather than have Coco overtake her in the race or have a player, although out of the top 7, having a Slam title to their name and indeed still time to close up even further in the race.

If she does win the title Venus will head the race and indeed be second in the rankings, just 54 points behind Muguruza with little to defend for the rest of the year. For now in the live rankings she has with her QF win passed Wozniacki, Konta and Kuznetsova to #5.

Would be a great story for Venus to take the title then go on next month to claim the number 1 spot.

From pre to post the US Open Jo stays at #7 with Venus having moved up from WR 9 to WR 5 and Kerber dropping from WR 6 to WR 14 - dropping a net 1990 points can have that effect.

Clearly in the race she has lost ground to most players but by hook or by crook she also stays at #7 there, now behind the same 6 women as in the rankings. It might be a good idea to stay at least there, when outside the top 7 guaranteed a place in the tour finals we now have 2 of this year's Slam champions ( actually 3 but not anticipating Serena being ready for that !! ).

With Jo at #7 on 3655 race points, Ostapenko is next at #8 on 3493 with no-one else within 700 points of Jo. #9 Mladenovic is on 2876. The newest Slam champion Stephens is now #12 on 2711 ( 2700 of those from Toronto, Cincinnati and the US Open so she needs to calm down a bit! )

Bit of a gap now ahead of Jo in the race to #6 Wozniacki on 4210 points.
