Oh dear, fair chance that could be his last match too. Mr Fognini in his home country, having earlier this week just lost out in an almost three hour three set battle with Rafa.

Aljaz should fancy this; top seeded in his section, has 1-1 H2H with lacko but both on hardcourts and a 1-0 h2h with Kukushki, albeit again on hardcourts in Irving a few weeks ago.

Andy also lost to Fabio on clay in Italy in DC back in 2014, a straightset drubbing. However, Andy is 3-2 up on head to head with last outing being in Rio in the Olympics last year. Will be tough if they end up playing each other. Maybe it will bring out the best in Andy?!

Hopefully !

Clearly clay is Fognini's best surface, though the extent of the Davis Cup beating he gave Andy probably owed a fair bit to Andy not having a lot left after being a bit ill in advance of he tie and having to then play singles and doubles, seemingly partly due to the only doubles alternative being the still on comeback Ross Hutchins, to my mind unaccoubtably early reintroduced to Davis Cup, certainly when combined with no further doubles backup out there.

My main problem is not that an in-form Andy wouldn't have good chances, indeed probably be favourite, against Fognini, more the clear fact that recently has certainly not seen in-form Andy

The lack of altitude in Rome as compared to Madrid I think really helps Kyle's game, he won a challenger here this time last year, no accident I feel on his best surface and normal atmospheric conditions. I hope he is fit and can get some good preparatory work in for RG.

L32:  (3) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 13 (6+7) vs BYE

JJR/Tecau or Isner/Sock in the last 16.  As in Madrid, Kontinen & Peers are the top seeds & the Bryans the second seeds.

The head-to-head is 3-2 in Andy's favour, with "Foggy" having won their last encounter on clay (that crappy rugby pitch of a court in the DC World Group QF in Naples in 2014, though I suppose it could be argued that the conditions were the same for both players), but Andy won the first in straight sets (7-6(11) 6-4) in the last 16 of the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2009).  Foggy's a player who blows hot & cold.  Let's hope he's having a cold day when he plays Andy.

Yay and QR2 also goes by the name of FQR

Effectively 35 points so far for Aljaz ( 25 + 10 for playing in R1 ), a net 15 points increase for him and will keep him GB #3 in running, although all very tight #2 to #4. More important is that they are all up in the the top 60.
