Andy Murray- poor form after injury, or the start of the decline?

You can say Murray is coming back from injury etc, but even at AO he was not outstanding.

This is  not just about form, this is also literal tennis. His groundstrokes of late, are more like challenger level. This recent level of play, is actually worse than any other set backs in form in the past, like when he had back surgery, or when he first became a father etc.

Discuss.

it wouldn't matter if he was in top form you don't like him so why discuss

I think this Murray fella must be ruddy lucky to have groundstrokes of challenger level and sit #11 in this year's race and how on earth he won an ATP 500 just a few months ago ( he must be a serve bot   ). So I suggest slight hyperbole, and without seeing today's match I have seen recent matches vs Ramos-Vinolas and Thiem and indeed while clearly not at his best, his groundstrokes are unsurprisingly rather better than that.

Today looks very disappointing. I have been one who rather thought he would get his act together after a slow start to the year on top of his phenomenal but hectic end to last year. But I have to admit this is getting a tad worrying and re injury - a) I don't get the impression the elbow issue was that bad at all, mostly setting back his service through lack of practice on it and b) as said it's been most of the year from the Aussie Open.

Re the actual question, I don't know, maybe partial maybe more, I'd still like to think not.

Edit : though I had somehow totally forgotten about his shingles ( partly no doubt because I haven't seen Andy himself refer to it it in discussing his form ) which indeed may have had real ongoing effects, and already at the Aussie Open. So that's a rather unknown in the mix. Let's give things time ...

Remember - coming into Madrid Andy was 15-5 on the year to date. Same tournie last year he was 13-4. Clearly he is so much worse than a year ago? Mmm. I don't recall the same panic then, why panic now?

John, like I said this is not about stats, it is actual game looks really off. Depth of strokes, penetration etc.

Thing is, this forum is like the BBC, not allowed to say anything, where as MTF is free speech.  Not true, I just give home truths. You seem to think being critical is slagging off.  I asked a genuine journalistic question about Murray's form,  wanting to have a discussion about it, and you call it slagging off! You would not last 2 mins on MTF.

to be fair having thought about it just now on the Tube,  I am concerned,  particularly as Andy says he is concerned himself. ROME is a big week for him next week.
