L16: Marco Cecchinato & Matteo Donati (ITA/ITA) CR 1557 (924+633) defeated (2) Ken Skupski & Neal Skupski CR 197 (91+106) by 4 & 1
Somehow, I had a nasty suspicion that would happen. I really should wait until they get their first match out of the way before printing off a draw sheet.
How long is this Skupski folly going to continue? Yet another 1st rd challenger defeat, this one plumbing new depths, a partnership which as well as their ranking is just going backwards with not even a glimmer of improvement.
I know blood is thicker than water but Ken who has won 3 titles with other people needs to dump Neal (diddly squat with anyone) for the sake of his own career.
I care about our doubles players and seeing this decline over the last 6 months or so pains me. Common sense must prevail now.
I'm no expert on the relative strengths of Ken and Neal, but Neal has hardly had much chance to win more than "didly squat" with anyone else in his pro career, just the very occasional foray. And Ken's ATP tour titles date back to a couple with Colin Fleming in 2009 and one with Robin Haase in 2011.
Our doubles full stop is certainly losing its depth with Ken hanging in as now just the 3rd Brit in the top 100 with Neal, Jonny Marray and the retired Colin Fleming having all relatively recently dropped out. Currently a real lack of back-up to Jamie and Dom apart from ( in Davis Cup terms ) Andy.
Most tennis players lose a lot of the time, especially if they're playing at higher levels. And looking at the Skupskis' results, while I'd agree this is a less than stellar one, their losses in the early part of this year have come to Cabal and Farah (top-ranked team), Elgin and Zelenay (in a final), Fyrstenberg and Klizan (a good team - and the brothers had defeated Koolhof and Middlekoop, a good team), and Peya and Pavic (CR 60). They've had a few poor losses thereafter, one of them very close. But hardly 'write someone off' material.
That's not to say that I don't think some kind of change might be helpful. Or that I don't think we need more investment in our doubles teams, as we're lacking depth at present. But that's a slightly different question.
L32: (2) Aljaz Bedene WR 76 defeated Marco Trungelliti (ARG) WR 165 by 6-4 5-7 6-4
The first set he's dropped since the first round of the Miami Open, when he had to retire injured at 5-7 0-4, having qualified with two straight-sets wins!

L16: (WC) Matteo Donati (ITA) WR 222 (CH = 159 in July 2015) vs (2) Aljaz Bedene WR 76
Aljaz is in qualifying for Monte Carlo which starts this weekend so presumably if he continues winning here he will have to withdraw. I would suggest a rest might be needed if he goes all the way anyway.
Hmm, if he gets to the final he'll be playing one match for 32 points, versus one match against probably tougher opposition for 16... Lets see how far he goes. I thought he looked tired in that match today to be honest.
If he was tired it would be understandable, he had played several days in a row prior to Monday and probably used Monday as a travel day. He now gets a genuine day off before his second round match and Donati should be an easier opponent than Trungelliti. A good deep run here will set him up nicely for the rest of the clay season as I see he is stepping back up to ATP level events from Monaco onwards.
