R1: BOULTER, Katie (GBR) 1 297 v ZVONAREVA, Vera (RUS) WC UNR CH=2 2010
R!: CHRISTIE, Freya (GBR) 3 347 v MUNOZOVA, Anette (SWE) 791 CH=747 12/9/16

Not the sort of draw the top seed would be expecting in R1 of a $15K event

Wow, thought Zvonareva had retired. But according to the ITF, she hasn't played at ITF or above for nearly two years.

This, from Aug. 2016, helps fill in the blanks: http://www.wtatennis.com/news/article/5850440/title/catching-up-with-vera-zvonareva
A rotten bit of luck for Katie, who might be wishing she'd stayed in Oz. Either she loses to a player who's hardly played in years, and everyone piles in, or she 'only' beats a player that's hardly played for two years, no big deal. She can't really win either way.

A very productive use of her time out! I do wonder what is on the curriculum of a Russian political science degree?

Vera is known for being a 'swat', in the nicest sense, and an academic. Rather like Petkovic.

As it's a Master's degree, in Political Science, it should (hopefully) be international based i.e. only Russian insofar as it is taught there.

It's probably not as bad as one student I know who told me, with a straight face, that she has a BA Hons in Public Administration - from Greece !

Do you mean by international based taught at the Russian university in Donetsk?

I meant the modules presumably will not be domestic Russian political science.

Sorry being deliberately obtuse, but I do feel the Russians consider all things political in their neighbouring countries to be domestic political science.

Thanks for all the info. I did see the article on WTA at the time, and knew she had married and had a baby - just was surprised to see her making a comeback.
