Website / stats pages issues

Thank you Steven. What joy! Just looked at the women's table - oh, how I've missed them. So much information on one page, great for instant catch-up.

Thanks everyone.

It remains the case that the only uploader working on webs.com at the moment is the single file uploader (and this has now been the case for at least a month), which means that in order to update just one file, you have to search through a very long list of files in a very small window looking for the old version you need to delete (because there is no overwrite option when uploading) then another few clicks to find and send the file. It requires at least 20x as much time as uploading the whole set of tables used to take, so it's unsustainable long-term, but it'll enable me to update the tables every couple of days while I finish sorting out a new home for the site. So, some good news at last ...

This week's GB women's top 25 table is up at https://bitly.com/17rlTuq - some of the links to previous tables won't work and none of the little pics are there but it should be usable, at least for clicking on the draw and OoP links and for seeing how many points players are defending over Indian Wells fortnight.

I'd like to say the men's table will be up tomorrow but reconstructing the table after a break like this takes a lot longer than setting up a new week's table under normal circumstances and I've got so much else to do over here that it'll probably be next week before that gets revived too.

 Many thanks Steven biggrin

I've been holding off moving the stats pages to their new home while I sort out some other urgent things over here but for the last 24 hours, even the webs.com single page uploader (which I've been using to provide a limited service over the last couple of weeks) has stopped working ... and to add insult to injury, it failed just after I'd deleted the men's table to make way for the new one (it hasn't been overwriting old files when you send over new ones, so I had no choice but to do that), meaning that people can't even access the original week 12 men's table, which would at least provide access to the draw and OoP links.

So, I've decided to bite the bullet and initiate the move now.

Changing where britishtennis.net points to from webs.com to its new home might take anywhere between 4-48 hours to work its way through the Internet (assuming it works at all) and it's not clear whether britishtennis.net will fail to point anywhere for part of that time, though the forum won't be affected. Of course, if I've been giving the wrong IP address for the A-record, it might point anywhere, but hopefully that would be quick to sort out!

Evidence that it has worked and britishtennis.net is pointing to the new site will be when the site banner pic (the same as the one at the top of the forum pages) reappears at the top of the home page, and you can both get to the current men's table again and see the emoticons on it.

At that stage, the tables for weeks 10-12 and up to date Best 16 and Best 18 lists will be available but clicking on links to earlier pages will produce a page not found error. Once it becomes clear that the move has been successful, I'll start to move all of the historical pages over too, though it might take weeks to transfer all of them, especially the ones I don't have copies of (e.g. those originally created by other forum members) - moving the rest of the site over would be easy if I could FTP all of the historical pages off webs.com and then over to the new home, but webs.com FTP isn't working in either direction at the moment - if it was, the site probably wouldn't be moving in the first place.

Sorry you've got all this hassle Steven. Just having the tables again this last week or so has been such a treat.

Not exactly Herculean stuff (though thanks ), just bad timing - I'm wishing I'd moved the site long ago, when I'd still have been able to get all the old pages off webs.com easily, though that's all too easy to say with hindsight!

I can now get the moved homepage up on my phone, along with the updated Best 18 and Best 16 tables (though not the top 25 tables yet for some reason) but not on my computer, even after flushing the DNS and even though the phone and computer are using the same wireless connection. Apparently this isn't uncommon as the changes propagate across the Internet and everything should resolve itself in over the next day or so.

As I mentioned in last night's post, you'll know you're seeing pages from the new host/server ...:

1) Home page - when the BRITISH TENNIS banner is back at the top of the page and the links at the top are "GB RANKINGS/STATS COMPETITIONS (BOTB) GB TENNIS FORUM" instead of those plus "ARCHIVE NEWS / INTERVIEWS". I'll put the latter link back once I've found the best way to retrieve at least some of the archived stuff from webs.com - I don't want to lose pages that some forum members put a lot of work into even if those pages are now quite old.

2) GB top 25 pages - when you can access the current week's tables through the 'new' homepage and the last update date is today, 21 Mar 2017, or later.

3) Best 16 / Best 18 lists - when you can access these lists through the 'new' homepage and they have been updated through to at least the end of last week

In the meantime, you'll either get an error message when you try to access britishtennis.net or an old version from your browser's cache.

Reports on this thread that you can see the new pages (and whether 1), 2) or 3) above or all of them) and, after that, of any teething problems you notice, will be gratefully received - I want to be fairly sure most people can access the moved site (and that any teething problems aren't too embarrassing!) before I tweet any links.

Brilliant Steven - I can access the home page and the updated player by player tables for both men and women - but not the top 25 tables at the moment (but that is probably my laptop anyway). I've really missed those tables !

Are you going via the web.com link in steven's post?

Do you have to sign in?

I get a page of shopping adverts which, when I ignore, then takes me to a register and sign in page.

Am I being stupid?

Turns out that the real explanation of why it was working from my phone but not from my computer is that britishtennis.net (which I had typed in on my phone) works but www.britishtennis.net (which I had bookmarked on my computer) doesn't work yet. Who knew there was a difference?!

Also, checking on the home page, the links to the top 25 pages on there include the www (which must be why they don't work yet) but the links to the Best 18 and Best 16 lists don't include the www (which must be why they do) - I can't be bothered to go through all the links removing www's now given that it should all sort itself out in a matter of hours, but in the meantime, if you try to access the top 25 tables and get an error message, removing the www. from the URL might well get you to the table you're looking for.

I used the britishtennis.net link in Steven's post. Went straight to the home page with the banner at the top.
And the mens table is here britishtennis.net/stats/ptdm.htm
Womens table is here britishtennis.net/stats/ptdf.htm

Edit - just tested the links I posted to make sure they worked

Edit again - Steven's workaround works for me
