Week 7 - ATP 250 - Memphis Open - Memphis, TN, USA - hard

QR1: (Alt) Andrew Watson WR 1507 (CH 1247 in July 2015), age 20 vs (q4) Darian King WR 139 (CH 130 in November last year)

Andrew is I believe at the University of Memphis.

Memphis is an American college tennis programme that could probably drop the American and be referred to as an Anglo Saxon tennis programme in America with a Spaniard thrown in for good measure. Four Brits, three Germans a Spaniard make up their roster. The only American is red shirted (benched for the first year). Alumni Connor Glennon, Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare will also get WC's.

Is that confirmed that Joe and David have a doubles WC? I notice they didn't participate in the WC tournament this year which got them a WC last year.

Their form would justify it. And didn't they have a superb match against the Bryan Brothers here when they were at university? It's when they first caught my attention ...

The Tigers website reports wildcards for alumni, Salisbury, O'Hare and Glennon. Also they are obviously thrilled by Joe and David's doubles form.

Well, yes, both teams have pretty rotten draws. And there were some much better ones. But they'll get $3,200 simply for playing in the first round - more than the SFs of the Dallas tournament made. And they have a chance at playing the best players - which is vital, if they're going to improve. They can play freely, as no one will expect them to win. And they can see where they are. And they'll have the benefit of their university coach, which I think has made a difference in the past. So good things no matter what.

Agreed, when there is plenty of money on offer there will be some good teams competing for it. When you have been accepted on a wildcard I do not think you can be too upset about an opportunity for a local crowd favourite to slay a giant in the first round. Hopefully some of the local student fraternity will turn out to watch the games?

Makes a lot of sense.

Watching through Bet 365 and Joe & David definetly enjoy a 'home' tournament atmosphere with a few chants for them.
