Alice served for the second set at 5-1, lost the double break advantage, but then broke once more to take the match into the decider. 3-6 6-4

Couldn't quite finish the job off.
Laura meets a player, whose name would probably have elicited some commentary in the early eighties. But, that's 20 years before the player was born!

Q1: Alice GILLAN (GBR) UNR lost to Sofia BOOTH (USA) UNR 3-6 6-4 4-6

Q2: Laura DEIGMAN (GBR) [q5] 923 v Salma EWING (USA) UNR (= CH, 16 yo; JWR 117, =JCH)
Edit: Miss Ewing beat Fran Jones in the MD at Stellenbosch, RSA, in November 2016, 2 & 3; and Julie Ball in qualies of that same tournament, 1 & 3

Salma Ewing also lost to Emily Appleton 6-3 6-3 in the Costa Rica junior grade 1 final in the first week of the year so in decent junior form.

Still a slow start to the year for Laura.

Both Laura and Alice must be disappointed.  Guadeloupe is quite difficult and expensive to get to and so they must have hoped for weakish draws and at least some points to put in their bags to take home.
