Week 44 - Challenger ($50,000) - Charlottesville VA, USA (Hard)

It looks like Ed, Liam and Brydan (as the last direct acceptance) have all joined Lloyd in the main draw since I first looked at the list a couple of days ago. The other two Brits on the Alt list, Dan Cox and Marcus Willis, haven't turned up (not a huge surprise) but there are two Brits in qualifying:

QR1: (wc) Aswin Lizen WR 1837 v (wc) JC Aragone (USA) UNR
QR1: (q8) Luke Bambridge WR 574 v Alexios Halebian (USA) WR

H2H 2-1 - Halebian won 6-3 7-6(9) at Eddie Herr (juniors) in 2010 but Luke won in 3 sets twice in US Futures qualifying in 2013.

Aswin and JC are both UVa students. The winners of these two matches will play each other in QR2 and 4th Q seed Dennis Nevolo (USA) WR 467 is the other seed in the section.

Lloyd has withdrawn   Brydan, Ed and Liam should be playing MD.

Disappointing not to see Marcus and Dan here.

Marcus is just about to get married - he collected his wedding suit yesterday (twitter), so I'll be surprised to see him playing again just yet.

Marcus has always maintained that he'll have a full go at it next year.

Glad to see Mr Bambridge, who I presume will be hoping to play doubles, also playing the qualifying singles.

Lloyd has been back in the UK for the last week, so had no intention of playing.

Lloyd had a lot of points to defend so probably wasn't realistic to attempt these challengers especially if carrying a knock. Ed and Brydan are the only real chances for Aus Open qualies.

Looks as though he'll be playing JC in QR2, as Aswin has just lost it by 3-6.  hmm

That's not a surprising or disappointing loss for Aswin Lizen. As they're both at university, the rankings that really matter are the university ones in which they're both primarily competing, rather than the ATP ones. And in the university rankings, Aragone is ranked 69th nationally, and Aswin Lizen is not ranked (which doesn't mean he isn't a good player - there are only 125 ranked players in the country)

Luke has played Aragone once before, at a junior event in Mexico back in 2011, when the American won in 3 sets.
