Week 40 - ATP 500 - Rakuten Japan Open, Tokyo (hard)

QR1:  (q2) Dan Evans WR 56 (CH = 53 earlier this month) vs (qWC) Akira Santillan (JPN) WR 232 (= CH)

There is no head-to-head.

The top seed is Mikhail Youzhny (WR 51), but as there are only two rounds of qualifying, Dan's in no danger of having to face him ( wink ), but he will, in all probability, have to face Ugly Mug (q6/WR 105) in QR2. hmm

Akira Santillan is a fast-rising player. Interesting match-up.

I thought the name sounded familiar. Santillan played in Cartagena this year where he beat Billy Harris. Didn't stop Billy taking a set off him first though. Sadly, I wasn't at that particular match, so I can't really provide any more inside info.

Certainly I expect Dan to win this one.

Dan losing 3-6 and 15-40 when the rain came

Needs to refocus and come out firing

After the rain delay, Dan held from 15-40 only to get broken in his next service game but he broke back for 4-4 and Santillan is now serving to stay in the 2nd set - 3-6 5-4*

0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40 ... and Dan breaks again to win his 4th game in a row and take the match into a decider

Dan was a break up in the 3rd but then the match swung wildly the other way again

QR1: (q2) Dan Evans WR 56 (CH 53 in Sep) lost to (wc) Akira Santillan (JPN) WR 232 (=CH) by 6-3 4-6 6-4

Yes, unless your name starts with Ed (Ed Corrie, Ed-mund - pity Dan's not called Edvans really!)

Colin perseveres with Scott Lipsky:

QR1:  (q1) Colin Fleming & Scott Lipsky (USA) CR 109 (64+45) vs Taylor Fritz & Ryan Harrison (USA/USA) CR 475 (237+238)

They can't have missed out on the main draw by much!  They will face the second seeds, Klaasen & Ram, if they qualify.  hmm

******

R1:  (1) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 9 (4+5) vs Martin Klizan & João Sousa (SVK/POR) CR 446 (282+164)

And yet another playing partner for Dom, but a half-way decent one ( wink ):

R1:  (3) Dom Inglot & Jean-Julien Rojer (NED) CR 45 (34+11) vs Benoît Paire & Vasek Pospisil (FRA/CAN) CR 187 (175+12)

And Dan resumes his USO partnership with Oz-Brat:

R1:  Marcel Granollers & Marcin Matkowski (ESP/POL) CR 71 (31+40) vs Dan Evans & Nick Kyrgios (AUS) CR 472 (272+200)

They're all in the top half of the draw!
