Week 39 - ITF ($50K) - Las Vegas, USA - Hard

Couldn't have created more chances. Shame. It was right there at 4-4*

Well, she lasted 3 sets very competitively, so it's not a disaster, but no signs of a major comeback really if we are honest ?

A couple of steps forward from mid summer probably, so in some ways very encouraging, but not quite doing enough to say being top 100 next year a dead cert, but for me still more than 50/50.

On the bright side, only 8 double faults in the whole match from 100 points, so hopefully the service woes have gone for the time being

If Laura can sort her serve out in the off-season then I can see her really kicking on in 2017 and getting back in the top 100 if not more.

I'm sure that noones more upset with the result than Laura - still net 7. If Laura is willing to guts it out then she deserves our whole-hearted support crysmile

Unlike a few months ago, I now really think there are signs of a comeback.  Then, she was using her PR and getting lots of prestigious WCs achieving nothing but unearned points and looking embarrassingly out of her depth.  Having dropped down the levels, she is learning to fight for her matches, grind things out when not going well (not sure, due to her talent that she ever had to do this before!), rediscovering her matchplay skills and that winning feeling.  Given the length of time she was out, it's never going to be a straight road back to the top (look at how erratic Andy was after his back surgery) and there's going to be unexpected losses and 'ones that get away' but I genuinely feel she's finally heading in the right direction. I suspect though that rather than seeing a major comeback breakthrough, we will witness a steady climb back up to the top.

Laura also lost the doubles last night (to Jaksic again) but she will be leaving Las Vegas with a few more points and a few hundred dollars prize money- although in her situation after a defeat like today I would be taking the prize money straight to one of the many casinos. I don't think you can gamble the ranking points though...
