L32: (SE) Joel Cannell WR 1276 beat (Q) Woo-Ram Kim (KOR) UNR (CH 987 Sept 2013) 6-4 6-1

Good to see Joel back up his week from last week with another very solid performance. As I mentioned in the other thread, I am always concerned about an "after the Lord Mayor's show" performance when a player gets to that stage in a tournament for the first time. It appears though that he has handled things very well.

Joel also avoids the 3rd seed in the next round as he retired in his opening match. Still a tough match though.

L16: (SE) Joel Cannell WR 1276 v Masato Shiga (JAP) WR 631 (CH 628 Sep 2016)

As I was keeping an eye on livescores, I was thinking of you, Bob, waking up this morning, needing your 'Joel victory' fix

Purely from the limited info of the livescores, what Joel did especially well was to dig in really deep in the first set.

The first four games took about half an hour - the gizmo wasn't stuck, they were just really long points, and really long games.

It was a good guess that whoever gutted out the first set would then sail through the second.

And Joel did well to make sure it was him.....

Yes - a match between two players who reached the final of the last Futures they played - Joel here last week, obviously, and Shiga in Jakarta 3 weeks ago.

That's a real shame, but another solid performance against a much higher ranked and in form opponent. After 7 matches in about 8 days, a couple of days rest won't do him any harm either. He also might just sneak into the MD next week. He is currently 2 places out with a couple of SEs to clear. Fingers crossed.

I see that Shiga, who beat Joel in R2, went on to make the final.
