A good win indeed. As an aside, I noticed Kontinen is playing with Srebotnik this week - anyone know why he didnt continue with Heather Watson, was it a ranking level or injury related thing, or just a change of scenery - which seems a shame whichever it was!
I could speculate that his girlfriend might have been a tad jealous of the great chemistry those two had ? Pure and utter cynical speculation, have heard absolutely no comments relating to this.
If she's under the weather and has to withdraw from something, mixed doubles is the logical one, as it doesn't cost anyone points, unlike withdrawing from the doubles, where you could cost someone else points. And at a guess she'd be aware that there would be no shortage of people wanting to play with the person who won the last GS mixed doubles, so she wouldn't be letting Kontinen down.
While there may have been Heather fitness / health concerns I do think the most relevant thing here is ranking.
Heather and Henri only got into Wimbledon as alternates. Since then Heather's singles ranking ( what she would use for entry ) has drifted down about 20 places. Now I know not where the US Open cut-off point came but it is clear that they had the potential not to make the cut. Given what a great time she had with Henri and that doubles is his speciality I am sure she would want Henri to be sure of his mixed doubles place here, which he was with Srebotnik. So, while it would have been potentially great to see them pair up again it all does seem pretty understandable.
Just to note that it was won by Laura Siegemund and Mate Pavic, who defeated CoCo Vandeweghe and Rajeev Ram. Very good for the youngster (Pavic is a 1993), and a very good year, too, for the 'elders' - Vandeweghe (next youngest) has CHs in singles and doubles and her first two Slam finals (AO and here); Siegemund at 28 has hit CHs in singles and doubles this year and was playing her first GS final; Ram at thirty-two years old has seen this year his first Slam final, Olympic silver medal, CH in doubles (20), CH in singles (56), and could make the O2 in doubles
I was wondering about Pavic after I saw him in the men's doubles at Wimbledon. Seems like he specialised in doubles very young, especially given he was top 300 at 19 in singles.
Discussion about this initiated by Ana Mitric on Twitter: twitter.com/ana_mitric/status/774292405734498304. Sounds as if he was able to get into better tournaments playing doubles, so opted to do that.
