Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open

James Ward in qualifying today

James Ward WR236 v Maximo Gonzalez WR146 (ARG)

Tough draw for James, fingers crossed but not confident given his year so far

Well done for making it in, Dino !

Still feel sad for Dan Smethurst when he was the first alternate for Roland Garros, and was there in Paris, just waiting and hoping, but not to be......

With a few more details:

QR1:  James Ward WR 236 (CH = 89 in July last year) vs (q29) Máximo González (ARG) WR 146 (CH = 58 in July 2009 - he's 33)

There is no head-to-head.  Very definitely fingers crossed.

May be nothing more than blind optimism, but just got this feeling that James is going to spring a surprise here and win this one.

Bookies don't concur, making Wardy an odds on favourite, but I know what you mean, to us loyal fans, it would sure feel like an upset.

Best of three. It's all over. Wardy seems to be sadly hurtling into retirement on current form.

Seems like the bookies got it as wrong as I did cry

Disappointing but sadly not remotely surprising. It was an absolute cracking draw for James as Gonzalez is an out and out clay court specialist (this is his first match on hard court for 12 months) and in anything like decent form I would have expected James to be winning this easily. Then with Fuscovics in R2 either Wu or Giustino in the final round (seventh seed Olivio lost to Wu) this was just about as good a draw as anybody could have hoped for.
