Week 34 - USO Qualifying (hard)

Great result.

I am right in saying 1st time Laura has qualified for a GS. Or did she do it in the Aus open previously?

Laura is totally going to be playing either Hev or Naomi.

I think it's the third time (with an additional asterisk): 2011 US Open, 2012 Australian Open, 2016 US Open.
The asterisk is 2012 French Open, where Laura didn't make it through qualifying, but got in to the MD as a LL

Well done to her. I'm pleased and proud. Now for a favourable draw, and she could go a round or two.

Her LR is up to 230 now, and with a R1 win, she would go top 200 again. A step in the right direction.

Eight by my count, in the singles alone.

It was more recent than I thought, 2012.

Absolutely delighted. I genuinely didnt think Laura had 8 consecutive victories within her, so good on her. more to come with luck.

On current form Laura must be a solid favourite against Naomi, and of course the winner will likely play Aga R, but still it guarantees one Brit into R2.

Laura article on US Open website with a few interesting quotes about her struggles since returning:

Thanks for posting that, it always struck me that Kyles attitude to ranking is a very healthy one, ie he focuses on playing the games and the ranking looks after itself.

I don't know whether his attitude is intrinsic or came through coaching during his transition from juniors to seniors while being coached by Beechy who I understand was looking after Laura during Wimbledon. Regardless very happy for her she appears to be in a good place presently in terms of the tennis she is playing and her attitude to it.

Don't know about Laura being favourite but it's a great draw for both really - and just SO good to see Laura getting things back together.

When one thinks how easily she might have lost that first round match at Landsville, and then again against Tara in R2, it shows what small margins can make such a big difference.

And interesting article (see kundalini, tx) about the perils of the protected ranking.

NB I note that Lottner (who only beat Tara after rain messed things up) qualified comfortably for the MD

As did CiCi Bellis - congrats to her. Wonder if staying 'amateur' for a (probably short) stint of college is looking a little less attractive ?

From all the tweets flying around, I seems Beechy is still coaching Laura now.

Going to be a very interesting MD match up.

L128: Andrew Fitzpatrick UNR (CH 461 Aug 2012) v Colin "Beechy" Beecher UNR (CH 264 Nov 1995)  smile

Definitely a match up worthy of Arthur Ashe court night session.

More seriously though, congrats to Laura on qualifying and good luck to ALL our plays in MD action at Flushing Meadow.

I've always found it quite annoying when work interferes with my holiday, but a bit of a different situation for Laura.

Good quotes on her more relaxed attitude and pressures of PR too and it was apparent from watching those matches earlier this year that Laura was getting frustrated with herself very easily.

The bookies can't split the pair, so both yourself and they're of a different opinion to me. We shall see, but I honestly think when you're on the sort of run that's Laura's been on it's going to take a bit of stopping. Unless Naomi finds her best form from earlier this year or Laura hits the wall, I only see one result.
