Week 34 - ATP 250 - Winston-Salem Open, Winston-Salem, NC (hard)

QR1:  (qWC) Dennis Uspensky (USA) WR 1323 (CH = 1021 in February last year) vs (q7) Liam Broady WR 283 (CH = 158 in March last year)

It's a 16-man draw.  Liam will probably face the Japanese q1, Nishioka, if he reaches the FQR.

*****

L64:  Gastão Elias (POR) WR 61 (CH = 60 last week) vs Dan Evans WR 60 (= CH)

The winner faces Richard Gasquet (1)

L64:  Kyle Edmund WR 86 (CH = 67 last month) vs (WC) Rajeev Ram (USA) WR 103 (CH = 56 in April)

The winner faces Viktor Troicki (9).

L64:  Aljaz Bedene WR 79 (CH = 45 in Novembner last year) vs Qualifier

The winner faces Roberto Bautista (2).

By all accounts, Kyle's match is in doubt as Kyle may be in New York for the Winston Salem Open, but his clothes are in Denver and as for his rackets, who knows where - all courtesy of United Airlines and a baggage mix-up. I am sure they will get it sorted though.

If Kyle is in New York for the Winston-Salem Open, he is as lost as his rackets!

Hope that it all gets sorted.

Yeah, only 570 miles too far north - unless he's waiting for a connecting flight there, of course!  wink

Taken from Kyle's facebook page (I think), courtesy of @KyleEdmundFan

United Airline cancelled flight after we had checked in. Then lost my clothing bag so missed the next flight. Flew us to a different location and then proceeded to lose my tennis bag and coaches clothing bag.

So arrived at wrong airport with no bags at all and then paid to hire a car to drive to the correct city.

Clothing bag apparently found in Denver and we are near New York.

Just need some bats and a fresh pair of clothes and we're off.

I think this tale of woe from the Olympics trumps even Kyle's (from the Beeb's live Olympics page):

Nigerian athletes in Rio received their Olympic kits only on day 13 of the Games, the BBC has learned.

Most of them had finished competing by the time the outfits arrived.

"We are disappointed and embarrassed. We've been wearing kits from the World Athletics Championships," one athlete, requesting anonymity, told the BBC.

Nigeria's men's football team has its own sponsored kit - but it has been hit by funding problems and players only arrived hours before their first match.

Thanks, BiS. What a nightmare! I do hope United pays compensation for the car. And anything else that requires outlay.

If he would like a soundtrack for the long auto route, he might like this, from a Canadian musician whom United treated shabbily a few years ago: www.youtube.com/watch. Went viral as a case study of bad corporate responses and the PR disasters they can generate.

Then again, he might want to wait until he gets the rackets back in one piece.

Well at least Liam woke up. Can pay to be wary of lowly ranked young Americans. But 19 yo Uspensky has done not a lot in his half dozen futures in the last year.

Big step up playing Nishioka.

Only one Brit in the doubles:

R1:  Wesley Koolhof & Matwé Middelkoop (NED/NED) CR 99 (51+48) vs (PR) Marin Draganja (CRO) & Dom Inglot CR 164 (137+27)

Interesting.  Dom is the defending champion here with Robert Lindstedt, but the latter is the third seed in harness with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi...  Meanwhile, Jonathan Erlich has teamed up with Santiago González.

 You can say that again!
