British Tour - Sutton Premier

As this is such a big ticket event in GB domestic tennis (with prize money of £2k for the winner and big cheques all the way down) it usually gets its own thread.

Eleanor Dean is 6th seed in qualifying and gets a BYE in QR1.

There are more foreign players than normal too, from Japan, Zimbabwe, Bulgaria....

Some of our better youngsters too, with Jizel and Essence Martins.

Laura Deigman is shown as having withdrawn in the player list, but is still listed elsewhere as 3rd seed. But Lisa Whybourne is now listed as having been given a Wild Card.

Main draws are out, although still plenty of gaps to be filled.
As I posted earlier, Laura Deigman has withdrawn. Seeds are Katy Dunne, Lisa Whybourn, Beth Grey, Laura Sainsbury and Lucy Brown from the ranked players, with Aimee Gibson, Yasmin Clarke and Mollie Crouch completing the 8 seeds, who all get a bye and will play on Thursday - when I hope to be there

This will interest some of you.
Eleanor Dean is playing mixed doubles with Harry Skinner in a field of 8 pairs. They have drawn Joe Salisbury and Beth Grey, seeded 1 in the QF.
Dan Smethurst and Lucy Brown are seeded 2

Game on folks.
Eleanor Dean qualifies with 6-1 6-0 and 6-1 6-1 wins. Plays Sarah Wray in R1, with potential opponents of Aimee Gibson (6) in QF, Katy Dunne (1) in SF and Lisa W in F
Should be a good indicator of her progress.

Sarah and Aimee should cause too many issues if she is back close to levels before injury. Katy however will be a different proposition.

Looks like I'm going to have a problem tomorrow. Ellie, Lucy, Beth and Laura S are all scheduled for 1pm starts. Guess I'll have to keep switching courts.

Well I have finally got home after a three hour journey, having watched 3.5 hours of tennis ! Saw a little of all the girls matches, met some interesting people - a great afternoon.

Wins for all the seeds, apart from Aimee who lost to Ellie 2 & 3, but it looked closer than that. There were plenty of good rallies, a few aces from Ellie, and a lot of hard hitting. Shame Aimee had to play her, but someone had too ! The others all had relatively straightfoward matches, with only Mollie and Lucy dropping a set. Mollie dropped the firt set, then took the last two 6-1, while Lucy failed to serve out the second set, but made up for it with a bagel.

Spent some time talking to Roland Daniells who is heavily involved in organising the tournament on behalf of Sutton. He also is a fine photographer, and is in the process of posting photos on the Sutton website. If you are interested go to www.stscsport.co.uk/ and click on the scrolling photos down the page. These are photos from today, and will probably be moved elsewhere tomorrow ! Quite a few of Ellie there.
