Week 33 - Challenger (€42,500) - Cittadino Challenger, Meerbusch, Germany (red clay)

QR1:  (q2) Dan Cox WR 546 (CH = 206 in July 2014) vs BYE

One or other of two German qWCs, neither ranked (though one is the q8) for Dan in the FQR (it's a 16-man draw).

Interesting. I thought you always needed an ATP ranking to be seeded in main draw or qualifying so here I would have expected just seven qualifying seeds ( with the top seed having no other seed in his bracket ).

Does anyone know what D-1280 against the 8th seed Breitbach's name in the list of seeds signifies?

Correct that.  According to his ITF profile, he is currently ranked Nº 1280 in Doubles.

Ah Hah Detective Bob. Still curiouser and curiouser to me if he has been seeded because of this doubles ranking.

OK, curious to be, because as is evident I have never seen or heard of such a thing. But maybe others have ...

It is unusual that the Olympics use singles rankings to seed in doubles ( indeed treat equivalently ), but as I say I have just never heard of doubles rankings being taken account of in singles seedings.

Is this a rule or an option for finding additional seed(s) ?

Dan qualifies:

FQR:  (q2) Dan Cox WR 546 defeated (qWC) Niklas Schell (GER) UNR by 1 & 2  smile

He was broken to love while serving for it at 5-1!

Well done Dan. Although as Challenger qualifying draws go, they don't get much better than that, with a bye followed by an unranked WC. Still got to make it happen though. 3 more points in the bag and a place in the MD.

Some tough spots available though.

(2) Carballes Baena WR 98
(3) Sijsling WR 112
(6) Samper Montana WR 211
Marc Sieber WR 302

Got to hope for the last one in that set.

Yes.

In a word which of rule or option ?

I presume a rule, I've seen it a few times before.
