Based on past glories , Peng could be tricky for Heather and her second round draw was also tricky from memory. Jo though has a very winnable match and could go deep into the tournament.
WTA stats department on top of their game: "6 - Rio will be the sixth time in the past seven Olympics that tennis has been played on hard. The only exception was Barcelona in 1992, which was contested on clay." - We all remember Wimbledon ripping up the grass, four years ago.
Which makes this WTA mention for an unlikely Brit today, holding an Olympic tennis record, perhaps less credible than it might have otherwise been: "42 - The number of games it took the Soviet Union's Larisa Savchenko to defeat Sara Gomer in Seoul in 1988. In terms of games played, Savchenko's 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 9-7 victory remains the longest [women's match] in the Games' history"
Hi - I'm probably being slow but Savchenko did beat Sara Gomer by that score in round two of 1988 Games...or am I missing something?!
The bold was the formatting of the original piece. I was just rhetorically continuing the theme that: given that the first WTA fact was clearly incorrect, could we trust the second? Yes, we could, but I certainly doubted it, and looked it up too. I thought it was nice to see a mention for Sara Gomer out of the blue, and wondered if she knew she held part of an Olympic tennis record. Having lost, I don't suppose she cares to remember it much, either way.
