Good chance for Aljaz to make the QFs where he would likely run into Ferrer.
If the Ferrer of the last few months shows up then it might be an excellent chance for another big scalp and a semi final but obviously got to get through a couple of opponents first and Dreddy as a probable R2 opponent is no gimme even if his game is not so well suited to clay.
Aljaz was 5-2 up with a double break in the second and made rather heavy weather of finishing off the match. Hopefully this has knocked off the rust and he can have a good run here as he has dropped a lot of points in the last few weeks through not defending his challenger titles from last year.

I know where the WR 507 has come from, but I think there's been a mistake on the ATP site as looking up the player it comes up with a ranking of 224 (CH) for Arvidsson, up 58 from a couple of weeks ago.
Surprised to see Dustin Brown here rather than Newport, isn't that where he usually plays? Wonder why he's decided to play on clay instead.

I am not sure what the rules are on appearance fees these days i.e. paying a marquee name to play in a smaller event but I wonder if Brown is one of those players who would have a commercial value that would attract a fee? He has an attractive game and personality and might be of value to a tournament director at 250 level?
Probably not but would be interested if anyone does know the current rules on fees and any examples of players who have received them (do they need to be declared if they are paid?).

Sorry, but you're wrong, LJR: his singles ranking is definitely 507, up 17 places from a fortnight ago. The figures you quote are for his doubles ranking. You're the latest victim of the ATP's inability to show a player's singles ranking as the default: lower down the scale, the doubles ranking comes up first if it is higher than his singles ranking (Radek Stepanek is another case in point: his doubles ranking of 30 comes up when you open his page & you have to click on "Singles" to see that he is ranked 118th there). We've all done it... The safer bet is always to use the live scoreboard for Challengers & above - or look twice to check which ranking is showing.

Interesting topic, appearance fees, is it all kept secret?
But I don't think they need to be declared to the ATP.
And they are not included in the ATP prize money because they are not part of the prize money winnings - they are like a commercial sponsorship, money for an ad campaign, a purely private arrangement.
My understanding is that quite a lot of events pay some appearance money. The Middle Eastern, Russian and Far Eastern tournaments were certainly known for it previously.
