James being "known and well liked" doesn't cut it for me, sorry. Indeed nor does being an "entertainer" in Marcus's case. He qualified last year and won one MD round and has lived pretty well off it. For singles a Q WC will do.

Known and well liked wouldn't cut it for me either were it not for two factors: one being what he has contributed to the GB endeavour over years and two that he is just coming back. Not only does the latter have an impact in the sense that he hasn't had the opportunity to gain the requisite ranking points this year; it also means that we're not clear whether this will (if the return doesn't work out) or won't be his last Wimbledon. And on those grounds, for the same reasons I would have supported a WC for PHM at Roland-Garros, I'm happy with one for Mr Ward here.

But it doesn't surprise me that he would come crawling out of the woodwork at this time of the year.

That's grossly unfair, not to mention offensive in its implications.  It's the Wimbledon Committee which decides which of the players should be offered a wild card.  You'd have been on safer ground challenging part of Wimbledon's contention that "wild cards are usually offered on the basis of past performance at Wimbledon or to increase British interest".

Fair enough Stircrazy - I did go a bit over the mark. Even allowing what the Wimbledon decides surely he has had enough chances.

So far:

1. HAAS, Tommy (GER)
2. KLEIN, Brydan (GBR)
3. NORRIE, Cameron (GBR)
4. SHAPOVALOV, Denis (CAN)
5. WARD, James (GBR)
6. To be announced
7. To be announced
8. To be announced

I like James Ward but he has struggled in his matches since he came back. I think a QWC  is appropriate on past glories! Reminds me of when Mel South got her final WC when she had  dropped her ranking I watched her match and she was poor! I  thought Tommy Robredo would have received a WC

Happy with those to get QWcs as should be going on Monday although won't be getting there till 12:30. Hopefully most of the Brits are not on till then!

I've seen that Luke's training in London this week so no injury issues it would appear. Staggering that with his ranking (ATP169/ranked 8 in GB - prior grass courts ranked 6) does not warrant a wildcard to date. His record this year with a variety of partners shows that, at 22, he has potential. One bad result against Groth & Millman in Nottingham might have affected his chances (even Andy Murray has an off day!).Probably not having a coach or agent and not taking to Twitter in self-promotion has meant that he is flying below the radar.

I will be truly gutted for Jonny & Scott if they don't get something. Whilst I am delighted by the Marcus/Jay partnership, to the best of my knowledge they have only played one competitive match together. Jonny & Scott have won multiple titles as a partnership over the last 12 months and fully deserve an opportunity.

In terms of rankings, Marcus and Jay have a CR 1889 whilst Jonny and Scott have a CR 567.

And I agree that Luke deserves something as well, being ranked 169 for doubles.

Jonny & scott are strongest doubles pair ever faced in NCL they had a good understanding the question is why not support our young players

I'm happy enough with most of the MD WCs. I have abit of a question mark over James, but I'm happy enough to cut him some slack as he's had quite a few problems and his DC service. The other reason I'm OK with it is that he's not depriving someone else who is more worthy.
I don't know enough about the QWC guys and surrounding people to comment on them.

Not I believe what Helen was saying. I read it as her saying that since there are still 3 unallocated MD WCs James' MD WC did not in itself appear to have prevented say Marcus and / or Jay getting one.

Don't know whether it's been said earlier on, but there are Quali WCs for doubles. I know this is hardly the same (!) but Scott and Jonny O may well get one of those.

The trouble with Scott and Jonny's claim for a MD WC is that they've played practically zero challengers (let alone ATP events). It's been mentioned on here before.
It doesn't really seem possible to claim that someone who's only played futures should have a Grand Slam MD wildcard.

This doesn't apply to Bambo, though, who's had some very good results in challengers and so, in my view, has a far stronger claim.

Yes, Scott & Jonny ars basically in much the same position as Marcus & Lewis Burton were a few years ago ( I suspect a bit weaker ) with a string of future titles but nout much at all beyond that.

To me futures doubles success does not make anything like a clear case for a Wimbledon MD WC ( and I absolutely accept where we are with MD WCs ). At that level singles wins and titles ( and say Jay's successes ) are undoubtably earned in a much more competitive environment and the general rankings level of their beaten opponents won't I suspect, like I recall with Marcus and Lewis, bear huge scrutiny Hopefully they will at least get a Q WC.

Undoubtably they've done great in futures, just saying ...

PS: Yes, Luke is a proven performer at a higher level and certainly to me looked the better doubles player when he partnered Joe. Pity he has lacked a regular British partner ( really regular at all but British appears to be an issue ) and when the music stopped for being paired up for the grass season hasn't found himself in a winning combination. I don't particularly question Marcus & Jay over Scott & Jonny, I do over Luke.

James' wildcard richly deserved, no issues with it from my perspective when people he's rinsed before like Kyrgios, Wawinka, Querrey (twice), Kokkinakis (twice), Mannarino, Isner, Pospisil, Gombos, Herbert, Zverev, Sugita, Edmund, Lopez, Harrison, Troicki, Vesely and Donaldson get to waltz in no questions asked.

2016-17 Challenger level doubles records.

Marcus Willis 1W/1L

Jay Clarke 1W/1L

Luke Bambridge 22W/16L

Guess who got the Wimbledon MD wildcard!!!

First thought is how the f*ck has James Ward got one over Jay Clarke?

The rest of it I agree with though that said.

There's 1 or 2 others I would say deserve one more than Ward as well. His wildcard seems a complete waste, i'm even wondering whether it may have been better given to a non Brit (which given that i'm pro WCs for Brits into Wimbledon is a strong statement to make).

I wouldn't be surprised if Luke ended up getting one. The plan may have been to give him one alongside Cam but after a couple of poor results maybe the partnership didn't gel. I can see him and Liam being offered one as they were before.
If he doesn't get one I agree it seems grossly unfair considering his ranking and some decent results in the last year.
