Nice to see Dom back in the fray, even if it is without Robert - & he could've done worse than Klaasen as a playing partner...
R1: Mate Pavic & Michael Venus (CRO/NZL) CR 82 (37+45) vs Jonathan Erlich (ISR) & Colin Fleming CR 108 (47+61)
The top seeds are Bops & Nicolas Mahut & the second seeds Dodig & Ram! Mind you, in Stuttgart, Bruno is playing with John Peers & they're the third seeds, while Robert is playing with big Sam Groth (unseeded) & Marcus Daniell is back with Artem Sitak! Talk about tennis musical chairs!
Klaasen has been playing with Ram who is also in the Netherlands but with a different partner. The fact that Robert is also back in action is suggestive of a conscious decision to try something new for the grass but to be fair, the world of doubles is massively confusing to anyone on the outside. I fully expect completely different pairings next week and of course Dom may have entered here with Raven before knowing Robert was fit again.
There was some interesting mixing up early in the clay season, but when it came to the real nitty gritty everyone was back in place. Bit curious. But I imagine that the same will happen again by Wimbledon.
There's one in there that's rather lovely. A few weeks ago, the ATP asked some of the young players with whom they would play doubles if they had the chance. Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe both chose Juan Martin del Potro. And lo and behold, in the Stuttgart doubles, where Fritz and del Potro are both in the singles ...
I suspect that's why he's suddenly playing doubles as well as singles this week, despite not having his customary partner. The good thing from their perspective is that they have very little to defend at Wimbledon.
And, to be honest, who cares? Even if this were to be it, once a number one, always marked as a number one, however brief it may have been. And as he himself said yesterday, it means that he will no longer spend his life being defined as the "plucky loser" (my idiomatic GB translation of "perdant valeureux") in the world's longest match. And, as a fan (not that anyone on this forum had guessed that), I was quite thrilled by the outpouring of affection for him on Twitter over the past few days. It's really lovely to see someone whom so many clearly regard as a fine person doing well.
There would also be something rather poetically apt about having Mahut get his number one via Roland Garros ... and Jamie Murray be the number one as he starts the British grass. (And then maybe the Bryans on the US hard courts??? All right, maybe there are limits ...)
