Gabriella utterly ruthless there, as well she should be. Interestingly, her likely opponent in R2, Valeriya Strakhova the 3rd seed, is having a much harder battle against an 18 yr old Chinese player (admittedly ranked 409), but gives Gabi good hope for the next round.

I thought I was going to put the kybosh on Strakhova, which would have been great for Gabi, but she eventually managed to scrape through in a third set tiebreak against her Chinese opponent.

Good start for Gabi in her singles today, first set 6-3. But what is really impressive is that she has won 16/17 of her serves (all 11 first serves) against the #3 seed!

Wow, that was an extremely impressive performance from Gabi, congrats!
A few more points on serve lost in the second set, but no break points against her the whole match. Look forward to what she can do on grass this season (though of course the grass tournaments now are not really designed for GB players of her ranking!)
