Weeks 21-22 - Roland Garros 2016 - Paris, France - Clay

I only saw the 2nd set of Laura and it reminded me of the Azarenka match, lots of close games and she was hitting the ball well at times but it never seemed in doubt who was going to win.

One thing I would say though is that if the Laura of 3 years ago had played this match I don't think the result would have been very different. That was her 3rd French main draw and she only won 8 games combined in the other 2, and from what I remember of them they weren't too dissimilar to today's. I think the grass will be a much better indicator of whether shes improving or not.

Also I don't think it will be a good sign if she doesn't play Eastbourne next week, because ultimately that is the sort of tournament shes going to have to start doing well in if shes going to get back to the top 100.

I tend to be a glass half full person - but that's not the only thing that makes me focus on Ms Watson right now. I just found myself thinking as she came through once again how fine her achievement is over so many years (in women's tennis terms) under so many different circumstances and despite an illness and recovery period that could have convinced her to give up. She's often overshadowed by others, but she just keeps on battling and accomplishing so much.

V'là qui vaout!

(which is, according to the BBC, Guernesiais for "Well done!")

And good luck in the next round.

GB WTA titles in last 30 years:
Heather Watson: 6

I never underestimate that

Court 2, 10:00 UK to see if Hev can score a famous victory, and become the first Brit in R32 at RG since Jo Durie in 1992.

A couple of convincing wins for the German opponents today.

Jo ran into an opponent in top for in Julia Goerges - Jo didn't do a lot wrong to get beaten but then again didn't do a lot to impose herself on the game either. Going in to the clay season no-one really knew what to expect from Jo, and she showed in Rome that her best on clay is very good. However, her B game is much better on hard courts whereas so far on clay she hasn't been able to win when below her best.

Laura didn't play well today but it wasn't a match she was ever likely to win. Even in the match against Azarenka, Laura looked several months at least from being back to the level she was before the injury problems so I don't think there was anything surprising in this match. Laura had a decent clay season in that she successfully picked the low hanging fruit of Zakopalova and Benhadi before her luck with the draws came to an abrupt halt.

Heather's match tomorrow should be a good one - maybe she got a bit lucky with the weather but she took advantage in style yesterday and normally Heather gets better as tournaments progress as the nerves disappear and confidence increases. If Kuznetsova plays like she has done the rest of the clay season though, it will be very difficult.

On the ladies side, let's face it, clay is not our greatest strength. Hev is really our only player with a game that comes close to suiting the dirt although it is definitely not beyond Jo to develop one. Thus far it's panned out better than expected for me. Nicole Gibbs is someone who has spent the last 4 years analysing, deconstructing and developing a game that had her ranked 41 as a junior into that of a top 100 senior. Regardless of her blogging which in part reflects a life of perpetual struggle against a psychological thermostat set at boiling point, there is a well recognised phenomena of high achievers being poor at self assessment. My view, which by definition she would not accept is that she is in good form playing close to her absolute limit.

Throughly enjoyed Hevs nerve jangling battle with the, as stated, equally psychologically tortured Nicole Gibbs. A game of imperfection but for the aprpriately named tennis anorak, pure gold. The conditions negated Hevs physical edge as the superior athlete with heavier clay reducing the weight of shot and making the defensive component of the game less physically arduous, turning it into a game of poker. No luck involved just Gibbs failing to go all in at the death culminating in Hevs radiant smile and Nicole's racket chuck.

In decent conditions Hev has it in her to lift her game in the way she did at Wimbledon last summer, today's game could be an absolute corker or if the heavens prevail, a damp squib.

Ironic really given the British weather, that all of our players seem to prefer hot and sunny conditions. The sun is out for Heather, but at 15 degrees the ball won't be flying through the court.

Kuznetsova is dominating most the points at the moment and at the same time not missing much. Heather will need to find a way to change the pattern of this match unless Kuznetsova starts making errors (like the df she just did as I am typing)

Heather playing quite well. Kuznetsova is a potential finalist.
