Week 17 - Challenger ($75,00+H) - Santaizi ATP Challenger, Taipei, Taiwan (carpet)

Some company & a "friendlier" service for Liam this coming week:

L32:  Qualifier vs (6) Dan Evans WR 124 (CH = 123 in February 2014)

L32:  (WC) Hung Jui-Chen (TPE) WR 618 (CH = 596 last December) vs Liam Broady WR 279 (CH = 158 last August)

Evo has fantastic draw, qualifier in R1, Wang or Chen in R2 and he is in the same quarter as Sugita who is the weakest of the top 4 seeds. His potential SF against Berankis is a match I would really like to see.

Liam potentially faces Sam Groth in R2.

I'm feeling confident for a good week for Dan, hopefully Liam can put a couple of results together too, though Groth would be a very tough proposition if both get through R1

 I'm assuming Jui-Chen is Liam's R1 opponent?

You're assuming correctly, Priesty.  Seem to have jumped the gun a bit there.   Omission duly rectified.

Is this definitely on hard courts as previous years it has been played on carpet? Drawsheet says hard, atp site says carpet...And if it is on hard courts, is it indoors still?

Bit of a mystery, that.  The draw sheet says "hard", but both the ATP Challenger page & the live scoreboard say "carpet", so the majority wins & I've changed it.  wink

And if it is on carpet, I'd like to think that'd help Evos slice even more with a lower bounce however, I'm not sure when the last he'll have played on a carpet court would have been... Which could take some getting used to

L32:  (Q) Dayne Kelly (AUS) WR 378 (CH = 311 in September 2010) vs (6) Dan Evans WR 123 (= CH - again! wink )

It would be nice to see Evo make some progress here, a very different environment for him than the European/North American and Australian events at which he has been successful over the last 12 months. Maximising and or being able to take advantage of opportunities alone is probably worth up to another 20-30 places in the rankings and with it bring some fantastic opportunities.

It looks like a carpet court to me...

Liam is a set to the good

Liam is now a double break up in the 2nd as well at *3-0. He hit a couple of terrific forehand clean winners in that last game.

Make that *5-0.

Albeit a very good draw for Liam, what is pleasing to see for me is that he is being much more proactive than the last time I saw him play. He seems to be hitting with more pace on the forehand side and is therefore able to generate more opportunities for winners.

L32:  Liam Broady WR 279 defeated (WC) Hung Jui-Chen (TPE) WR 618 by 4 & 0  smile

He'll probably end up playing Sam Groth (2) in the last 16... bleh

Liam serves out to love, sealing the win with an ace.

Good win today, but it gets tougher from here.
