Week 8 - ATP 500 Acapulco, Mexico - Hard

R1: Aljaz Bedene & Gilles Muller (LUX) v Wesley Koolhof & Matwe Middelkoop (NED/NED)

R1: (WC) Jonathan Erlich (ISR) & Colin Fleming v Mate Pavic & Michael Venus (CRO/NZL)

Slight feeling of déjà vu in Colin's match.

Aljaz found a good partner there.

Yes, and Mr Fleming and Mr Erlich a rotten draw. Sigh. Different result in the southern hemisphere, we hope!

This does not appear to have been posted anywhere yet.

L32: Aljaz Bedene WR 54 v (6) Ivo Karlovic (CRO) WR 31 (CH 14 in 2008)

H2H 1-0 Vienna 2011 (Hard) 7-6(4) Ret

On the face of it a pretty tough draw again, the obvious downside of entering the bigger events and bypassing the 250's where Aljaz himself would have been seeded. On the plus side, Karlovic has not won a match yet in 2016 and has barely played so hopefully there will be a little rust there. Aljaz himself has not won since Chennai and has some big points to defend in March so he could do with a good run here to kickstart his campaign.

Then they better keep going south. Mexico is northern hemisphere.

Good point. Geography has (in case you couldn't tell) never been my strength. But one would have thought that even I could remember the route of the equator in Latin America, given that there's a rather strong hint!

Principle of hoping for a better result still stands, though. No mistake on that one

Taylor Fritz has just beaten Jeremy Chardy on Court 3 ( young Fritz is making great progress ).

Next on : Aljaz Bedene vs Ivo Karlovic

First set Aljaz 6-4, broke Ivo at 4-4 and served it out. Interestingly hitting more aces than Ivo too at 7 - 5.

Outacing Karlovic is some feat! How often does that happen for ANYONE against Karlovic?

Quite a feat, even for one set.

Bedene wins a second match against Karlovic by retirement...! He is obviously not a good omen for Ivo.

Sorry for Mr Karlovic, who seems a good sort. But if anyone is going to profit, it might as well be Mr Bedene!
