Tough draw but clearly Aljaz is feeling confident as he has passed up some pretty weak 250 fields to play here and Acapulco. Fabio has not had a great start to 2016 and I hope it doesn't get any better for at least one more week.

^^^ in answer to my own question there may be weather related changes to the schedule . Thunderstorms in Rio right now, and steaming hot too !!!

Yes, someone tweeted a pic of one of the courts looking like a swimming pool! They've amended the schedule, leaving a few women's matches on it (maybe playing them indoors) and the odd men's match for later, probably more in hope than expectation!

Poor Aljaz - he went to 'sunny Rio' only to be foiled by the rain yesterday and the Fog today - he couldn't stop the 7th seed making it 7-0 in the H2H:

L32: Aljaz Bedene WR 50 lost to (7) Fabio Fognini (ITA) WR 24 (CH 13 in 2014) by 5 & 3

Steven, I think you have a coat you need to get ....?

Apart from the so-bad-it's-good pun, sorry to see the result. But at least it looks like a good competitive match.

I should have known better than to try and compete with the professionals

Hopefully Aljaz can get some consolation here at least, I am afraid I am still finding his strategy of playing 500 events puzzling when he could have been seeded at a couple of recent 250's and had the chance for a deep run and some nice points.  Top 32 is still possible before RG but he needs to start winning as he has quite a few points to defend in March.
