RE: Naomi Broady

I agree, the interviewer asked very good questions.  He just needs to stop saying 'like' every sentence!

I apologise for the sniffing it was very cold and my nose was running! Hope you enjoyed it. Always enjoy giving insight when and where I can. Thanks to Stephen for finally figuring out a time that worked for both of us to do it.

Hope everyone is well.

The sniffing didn't affect the interview Fitzy, just seemed you were in a little discomfort towards the end! Your account was honest and thoughtful. I've read earlier articles of yours when you were trying to survive on tour too, and am very pleased you've been able to turn your own experience and reflections on it into helping someone like Naomi. I'm sure your time with Sloane in particular was eye-opening, but its great - for both of you - that you have an such an opportunity now with someone of Naomi's potential (and as you say, who knows what that is?), and wish you both the best of fortune in seeing what you can make of it together. I like very much your philosophy of trying to empower Naomi in becoming more aware of herself and her own game, and therefore in better control of her own emotions and experiences on court. I hope that philosophy will make other ongoing improvements in her game possible.

Thanks! So I have a question to all really. Can be spread around.
Would you be interested in me starting my own podcast?

If so who knows who about me getting up and running. I mean I could do a regular instalment on someone's pod cast. Just feel I have a lot of insight to share on my journey. Could be fun.

Anyways look forward to feedback on that idea.

Always interested.
You might be able to talk to the other Naomi, Cavaday, who has set up her own weekly podcast with help from the people at Talk2MeRadio (audioboom.com/channel/talking-tennis-with-naomi-cavaday). She may be able to explain how she went about it.

Would be very interested, Fitzy.  Every bit of insight that goes beyond score lines is so helpful in enabling us to understand the tennis circus.

I can't comment on the technical side, Fitzy, though on that ISF's advice seems sound to me. However, on the podcasts themselves, based on my own experience with trying to put out any kind of regular communication, my own advice, for you to take or leave as you wish, would be as follows. First, don't make your initial intent over ambitious. That will only create pressure for you and start to make doing the podcase more of a chore than a pleasure. So better say to aim to it perhaps monthly initially, then you will enjoy it/ look forward to it more, and also have more time to think about what you'd like to talk about. Second, have some kind of outline for the possible topics of different podcasts. So, for instance, as there are 8/9 months left this year, have some sense of what might be the main topic of each podcast, if not for all of them, at least for the next few months. If you do one in a few weeks time, it might be about the clay court season, or whatever, but having a topic allows you to think about and make notes on content ahead of time. And third, if you are going to do a podcast of 20-30 mins or so, you will also need some kind of structure for it. The one you just did was structured by the interviewer, who asked you a set of questions, so if you are going to do it yourself, you will also have to have a way of mapping out the different segments of the podcast. For instance, you might have a section that provides an update on how Naomi is doing, but then you might have other segments that discuss other aspects of the tour, coaching, or that part of the season you're in. Then its easier for you to make some advance notes of what you'd like to talk about, and still be creative/ intuitive at the time you're doing the podcast.

Hope this is helpful, you talk well and have a good analytical mind, so would be great to hear from you more regularly!

Thank you very much. I wasn't thinking about doing it every few weeks but more every month or so. When there are little bits to share.
Something I will be looking in to.

I always find that these podcasts are much more interesting on a question and answer basis, than simply a monologue. Given that you clearly have a lot going on, would it not be easier just to link up with Britennis for a regular interview every month or even every couple of months. Given the growing following of the website, you may also get more coverage that way than doing it separately.

Following the undoubted success of the first podcast, I am sure that they (and we) would be delighted to have a "Fitzy Feature" on a regular basis.

Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast, the content was really interesting and pertinent, ie how do you lift a player through that 130=> 95 band. It is easy to talk about playing to a players strength if they have a powerful weapon that is under-utilised, but doing it and sustaining it is a different matter. Obviously you have to have a player totally engaged in the process and Naomi takes an enormous amount of credit for that but the people skills required to facilitate it and keep all stakeholders involved are also pretty impressive. Jamie Delgado seems to have done a similar job for Giles Muller before leaving at the beginning of the year.

To get Naomi to a point where she will be an automatic GS entrant must be very exciting and hopefully the next steps more so. I would only podcast if you enjoy it and in the nicest possible way I hope you get too busy working on Naomi's future challenges, ie improving the not quite so low hanging fruit in her game and analysing the game of her opponents for it to be too regular.

The content this time was great and reflected an excellent piece of work over a more than 6 month period and it is immensely more interesting to here a coach who has walked the walk talk the talk than those who have opted to engage only in the media side of the game.

Regardless of the frequency of any future podcasts goodluck and thank you for so regularly contributing to the forum.

I applaud Fitzy for the podcast and think the next stage is to get Naomi a more higher profile.

I think Fitzy said Naomi doesn't have a kit sponsor. I wonder how many of the public know who she is? Certainly by the question on eggheads answered incorrectly by someone who knew a little about tennis sums it up.

The next stage must be to get in the media limelight and thus drum up sponsorship and build up a pension pot.

I was talking about doing a podcast with them or similar. Not my own, maybe it came across wrong.
We can see what happens in the future. For now, on to tomorrow's match!

Really glad I took the time to listen to the podcast, a great listen, very interesting and revealing in all sorts of little detail.

Fitzy seems to have a great positive and future looking attitude that should really help Naomi. Just a year or two ago when she won a match at Wimbledon I saw her still talking about the breakdown with the LTA, now it looks like future, future and be the best she can be.

Good stuff coach, good stuff Naomi ( and a very well conducted interview ).

Thanks everyone - it's so nice to get such great feedback, especially from a forum I've been following for a number of years! I plan to pick up again with Fitzy just before the French and conduct another interview or two in the meantime.

PS - I'll try my best to stop saying "like" so often. I'm afraid this is a symptom of moving to and living in NYC!

Naomi live on R5L sports panel again.

It's not a tennis show, just general sport, and Naomi is only one of a three member panel, contributing occasionally.
It's just coming to a close, but (for at least a week) you can listen at your leisure to the hour long program here.

Or, as Naomi put it, "Tune in to @bbc5live at 1pm. I'll be pretending to know what I'm talking about!"
