Scott is going well in his quest to qualify for this tournament on the Swiss border, close to Geneva. 4-1 up first set.

He did rather better than that.  He actually won:

L32:  (Q) Scott Clayton WR 776 (= CH) defeated (6) Filip Horansky (SVK) WR 367 (CH = 317 last August) by 2 & 5 biggrin

*****

And, what's more, he gets a fellow qualifier in the next round! wink

L16:  (Q) Scott Clayton WR 776 vs (Q) Elie Rousset (FRA) WR 980 (CH = 454 in July 2013)

Nice win - and a decent draw with a chance for more points, although I suspect the focus is on the doubles.

I would certainly hope not !

Yes, the doubles has been going pretty well and they will want to continue that, but surely 21 yo Scott still very much wants to accomplish in singles and it is much more than a relatively less important accompaniment.

Very good win and great looking chance to go further.

Let me just explain that comment - he will be expected as a good doubles player and seeded to go deep in the doubles and pay some of the bills. The singles is always going to be more difficult as he had to qualify and then knew he would draw a seed in one of the first two rounds.
Scott will be trying to push his singles ranking, but it will be quite hard with the loaded draws at present. He is getting regular points, but not enough of the big ones to make a major impact on his ranking yet.

.. so he needs to keep a big focus on it, especially once he is in the main draw to get more more points to push up his ranking, which in itself in time helps to avoid qualifying and then he can continue that focus.

How else does his singles really improve so that it ( presumably where he would most ideally like to succeed in anyway ) can become more of an earner ?

Focus on doing well in both, perfectly possible, but again for the above reasons I would certainly hope that his main focus is not the doubles.

That should be well down the road, if at all, for this young man

A double dose of Horansky for Scott, though they nearly came unstuck!

QF:  Stefan Fiacan & Filip Horansky (SUI/SVK) UNR (0+755) vs (3) Scott Clayton & Richard Gabb CR 695 (372+323)
