Week 2 - ATP 250 - ASB Classic, Auckland, New Zealand

QR1:  Woo Chung Hyo (KOR) WR 2013 (CH = 1858 in September last year) vs (qWC/8) Cam Norrie WR 717 (CH = 637 in June 2014)

Good on the lad for giving it a go!   He should negotiate that first hurdle easily enough...   The top seed in the qualies draw is Robin Haase (WR 66).

Victory in QR1 would give Cam 6 ranking points and 2,105 dollars. Decent choice of tournament.

Presumably he can even accept that prize money, as expenses - after all, it's blinkin' expensive to fly from the US to NZ, so that justifies the claim pretty much in itself.

(even if he was visiting mum & dad anyway smile)

Jonny and possibly Colin are playing doubles here, so maybe they will sign up for singles on site as there are 5 spots still available.

I assume Cam is still over in NZ after the holidays and playing at the Te Anau Invitational in December. Might not have flown back over for college yet...

L32:  Aljaz Bedene WR 45 vs Sam Querrey (USA) WR 59 (CH = 17 in January 2011)

John Isner (3) (WR 11) lies in wait if he gets past that one!

Very nice opener for Cam and now a nice test against 34 yo Becker, whose CH 35 is from only 15 months ago.

I guess Querrey could be a good warm-up for Aljaz before playing Isner

Delighted for Mr Norrie, though it does feel a bit peculiar that people are able to earn 6 points for such victories. Then again, it's better than the old system which could see people beat top-150 players in R1 and get nothing, so ...

It probably wouldn't have been much different under the old system, as you still got 6 for making the FQR. It's just a bit messed up this week because it's AO qualies so the field is made up of players inside the top 100 and outside the top 250 and not a lot of players outside the top 250 will travel to Auckland for one tournament unless they are local.

Well played Cam.

Any chance you could get into the Top 500 before heading back to college please. A QF place in the MD here would clinch it

In the doubles:

R1:  Jonny Marray & Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi (PAK) CR 90 (53+37) vs (4) Eric Butorac & Scott Lipsky (USA/USA) CR 90 (45+40)
R1:  Aljaz Bedene & Joćo Sousa (POR) CR 670 (532+138) vs Julian Knowle & Oliver Marach (AUT/AUT) CR 99 (51+48)  bleh

The winners of those two matches play one another in the QF.

No disgrace in that for Cam. Hopefully some good experience before he heads back to college.
