British Tour 2016

A new thread for the new year.

There's an event in Graves going on this week, while the first week of the New Year sees a big Premier Tier event with plenty of familiar faces involved.

Highlights of the event in Graves has seen several US college players coming through qualifying:

Qualifiers:

(1) Mark Laishley
(2) Shakeel Manji (C)
(3) Henry Patten (C)
(15) Jeremy Gschwendtner
(5) Conor Tordoff
Luke Johnson (C)
Ewan Wilson-Baig
EITHER Sebastien Mathieu (C) OR (13) Rahul Dhokia

Awaiting them in the main draw:

MD Seeds:

(1) JWH
(2) Jonathan Gray
(3) Marcus Walters
(4) Chris Anguelov [BUL]
(5) Luke Oakley
(6) Harry Skinner
(7) Simon Roberts
(8) Michael Shaw

Other notable names include top British college Junior Jack Findel-Hawkins who should do well, Charles Broom (who's against [7] Roberts in R1) and Joe Woolley who's had a sterling first semester at Utah.

Rahul Dhokia took the final qualifying spot.

In R1, only JWH received a bye. Notable results so far (three matches to come in) include Clemson University Senior Luke Johnson taking out (6) Harry Skinner, Florida University Junior Jack Findel-Hawkins taking David Parry apart by a bagel and a breadstick, while all the other seeds are through. Jonathan Gray is also already in the QF after his opponent Louis Newman gave him a w/o.

In R2, the tastiest tie looks to be Findel-Hawkins vs Marcus Walters.

Josh Ward-Hibbert won the final 7-6(4) 7-6(8) against Jack Findel-Hawkins. Jack is a Junior at North Florida uni and looks promising given that result, he took out Marcus Walters and Luke Oakley en route to the final. Looking forward to seeing more of him after he finishes college.

Premier event in Loughborough gets a great entry list, as always at Loughborough.

Taking part are Marcus Willis, Marzi, JWH, Bambo, the Mr. Binding who beat Evo, Billy harris, Keelan, Recci, Strachan, Stoute, my mate Tiran (), and tons more good players .......

Look out for Giles Hussey in qualifying today. Decent player, Freshman at Georgia State, could cause a few problems.

Matt Short, Joel Cannell and Jonny O'Mara (and Clay Crawford) have also turned up as wildcards.....

It's quite a decent looking field to be honest, although I'm not sure where Willis and Whiteford have gone - listed as seeded entries but not in the draw, Bambo is top seed.

QF line up looking more like a futures event.

Bambridge v Crawford/Oakley
O'Mara v Harris
JWH v Cannell
Broom v Pauffley

Congrats to Charlie Broom for getting into such exalted company. Mind you, he has won by retirement in both rounds so far against Recci (4-1 ret) and Jhun (3-0 ret). But after a final qualifying humdinger at 7-6(8) 5-7 7-6(8), he has earned a bit of luck.

Crawford won against Luke Oakley.

Any ideas why Clay hasn't made more of a step up onto the Futures circuit? He's well ranked on the LTA rankings and seems to get some decent results. Is it monetary reasons?

Jonny O got a w/o against Billy

JWH beat Joel 4&4

and Neil beat Charlie easily

In the semis, Luke def. Jonny 7-5 6-3

and JWH def. Neil 6-4 7-6(4)

Well, you can't get a tighter score than that ..... but this week it's Josh who gets the big cheque and trophy:

Joshua Ward-Hibbert [8/1072] def. Luke Bambridge [1/507] 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-4

Just wish Josh could carry this form into the Futures events.  He has a real talent and in terms of all of our "younger" players, for me, he is the most naturally gifted athlete we have.  Mind you, it is easy to forget sometimes, that he is still only 21.  Time is still on his side.

At Billesley this week, quite a lot of the men in the acceptance list have withdrawn (Bambo, Jonny O, WillBomb - in Tunisia - etc. etc.)

Not quite sure what JWH is still doing here, for the third time is as many weeks.

But Freya is too in the girls so it may be some part of Notts' programme.

My little friend Tiran is through to the quarters.

As are JWH, Chris Anguelov, Rob Carter and Marcus Walters.

Also, beating seeded players, through are Harry Skinner (beating Samuel Ferguson), Robert Leck (beating second seed, George Davies), and Jamie Prad (beating Mason Recci).
