The ATP will remove a player from the rankings on receipt of the player retirement form. The WTA will remove a player from the rankings on the earlier of the date requested on the player retirement form or the end of the calendar year in which they officially retire.
The only way to free themselves from anti-doping requirements immediately is to submit a player retirement form. I can't imagine why any player would want to unnecessarily subject themselves to the onerous whereabouts requirements so I think it's fair to say he'll submit his form and be immediately removed from the rankings.
We should see an improvement in the numbers when the new rankings are updated, with a few of the men knocking on the door or ahead in live rankings and some of the girls now breaking through, although Katy Dunne is close to dropping out.
It's looking pretty skinny - Hamish is on 499 and may well drop out in the next few weeks
That said, there's a few hopefuls, as always, who are close to breaking through (or back through)
Ali Gray, Henry Searle are obvious candidates. Further afield, Toby Samuel is back in the entry lists, and there are others who clearly have the potential as they've been there before
But, overall, looking stable at 20, give or take one, not particularly rosy

The live rankings show us as down to 18 in the top 500 now - and 7 in the top 250.
Might be time to renew the battle of the 20/500 v 10/250 for 2025 and remotivate the players!!
Seriously, it feels like there is a big changing of the guard going on, and we can could find we are away from those numbers for a while, particularly the top 250 number feels a long way off
Yes, with no ATP 07/10 rankings update due to Shanghai we have 19 in the top 500 at 30/09, and then, as Jon says, live 18 for 14/10 with Hamish S dropping out.
With WR 500 being on 78 points, Liam could also drop out in the following 2 weeks. He is on 84 points but has 6 points to drop on 21/10 and a further 9 points on. 28/10. Got to think though that reasonably fit and well he will get back considerably higher up the rankings.
There are a few other men capable off breaking into the top 500 very soon.
Ali Gray, Henry Searle. Hamish Stewart, Ryan Peniston, Stuart Parker, George Loffhagen, Emil Hudd and Max Basing
I would say 20 in top 500 will happen again very shortly, 10 in the top 250 is a bit more difficult.

Maybe ( hopefully! ) Ryan will be back in soon and Liam, if he falls out, also back in fairly quickly. Clearly they have the ability and the history.
Otherwise, I think you are again being quite a bit over-optimistic re our men's top 500 prospects. Great if 20 does happen, but it might well not. IMO maybe not this year anyway and could be at least well into next year if next year at all.

My assessment is with you, Indy, I dont see it happening - each one maybe individually could stand a chance (some more than others) but as a group, it wont happen again for a while, I reckon
I think a lot may be down to Liam and Ryan. If both of them are top 500 then it really just needs one more. So yes I can see that it could well happen but it might well not.
And Ryan doesn't appear to have entries in the next couple of weeks at least?
Absolutely - I'm not disagreeing with paulisi - there's a very good chance it'll happen
But my point was, as we saw last time, it was on the cards, it was happening, and then there was always a last minute hiccup which dragged it out for AGES
Also, saying there's a few more likely to make the top-500 is ignoring the ones about to fall out
Without steven's excellent tables (from 6 years ago ) I'm not quite sure about the others who are falling
I know Kyle has his M25 finalist points from last October coming off - not sure if that's in the live rankings
And Aidan had a Challenger QF spot last autumn
**Most likely, though, surely is Giles Hussey - he had tons of points last autumn and doesn't seem to be playing now - he must be out of the top-500 soon
