Top 500

Back up to 13 men in that Top 500. Cam and Marcus have made spectacular (re) entries but Josh M has just dropped out - maybe for good.

Dan C is probably just one win away from getting back in there as well.

13 for both men and women, but Bambo should return next week for the Men to take the lead.

Calling Em, the sisterhood needs you to reach the QF in Lexington.

Having failed in her mission for the sisterhood Em was distraught. "What can I do to make it up?" she cried, "I'm about a dozen points short". Unfortunately she had to be told that short of jumping on a plane all the way down to Brazil and getting herself into WTA tour qualifying and then winning really not a lot. "I'll do it, I'll do it", she exclaimed, "lovely family for putting me up in Kentucky, but byeee ..."

A short time after Em appears on a court in Brazil, wins her match and has almost certainly brought it back to 14 all in the top 500 stakes

With Jay and James reaching the singles QF in South Africa, they will now be GB #19 and #20 respectively in the rankings on Monday week. That should be 20 in the top 750.

Re the top 500, Marcus will move back in giving us 12 in the top 500.

With these on the rise, the 20 in the top 500 begins to look more feasible again, with just about enough possible bodies if it all clicked.

From these outside the top 500, Luke, Jonny, Dan Cox and Jay are very possible over time. Then we have Richard, Neal, a hopefully fit again Evan, Joel and James as also possible.

Others may add one or two more, but the real issue re 20 in the top 500 remains overall lack of depth in numbers since while one can name 20 or slightly more, realistically they won't all come off together.

Great progress though by some of our younger players, and if the 20 may still be far off ( probably at earliest when more current juniors come through ) it will still be good to watch individual moves towards that mark and the overall number hopefully increase.

As an outside bet, if he can stay fit for an entire season, I would add Billy Harris to that list. Although his results haven't been stellar so far, I have seen enough to believe he has the potential to get there. There are a couple of others too.

In the latest rankings both our men and women have 13 in the top 500.

That's been equal quite often lately but it now goes pretty well through the rankings ( which have often had quite different distributions in the past ).

Both : 3 in the top 100*, 4 in the top 200, 6 in the top 300, 13 in the top 500 and 26 in the top 1000. Doesn't follow through so precisely at other 100 markers but at these fairly significant ones it does.

In general the women have been catching our men for depth and my feeling has been that they will in time overtake at many markers with the good junior girls. But we have lately been having some promising performances from some of the younger men, none more so than Jay. Be interesting to see how these look in a year's time.

More immediately re the top 500 Luke is going to drop out next Monday but Jonny will be close to joining and is playing in Qatar this week and next week.

* By the way, as per Steven's year end figures, we have not had as many as a total of  6 singles players ending a year in the top 100 since 7 in 1985 ( indeed that's the last year we had more than 4 in total ). And, of course with Aljaz, we are very close to 7 now and have recently had 7.

It has in many ways been a great year for British tennis.

Don't look now, but Jonny O'Mara (despite not playing again this week) is up 5 places at 498 on the live rankings. I know it is early days this week and there are others below him still playing and I also know that the live rankings are not always 100% accurate, but as things stand, he might just sneak in. Go Jonny.

Go Jonny. Jonny O'Mara breaks into the Top 500 for the first time at WR 491.

That gives us 13 in that Top 500 bracket. The biggest problem we have however, is that if you look below that, there are not many pushing to break in there and add to the tally.

Well done to Jonny. That's the guys back ahead of the girls 13 vs 12 in the top 500.

Though yes indeed, backup is the big issue as you go further down. For players in the top 1000 the women now lead 28 vs 24.

The 20th ranked woman is Beth Grey at WR 735 ( and the 20th ranked woman will next week be Maia Lumsden, inside WR 700, once Eden Silva's latest points, taking her back up to GB 18, are added ). The 20th ranked man is at WR 800 and that is Dan Dowson who I read is moving on to other things. 21st is Joel Cannel, WR 831. Both Joel and Josh Paris ( WR 935 ) have for now for a little while stalled in their previous eyecatching forward momentum. Billy Harris also so, at WR 1009.

James Ward, if and when fit, can clearly get back well into the top 500. The GB 14 & 15s, WRs 567 & 619, Neil Pauffley and Luke Bambridge respectively, hopefully can break back into the top 500. Looking much further down I'd say by far our most underranked player re his capabilities is Tom Farquharson at GB 26, WR 1026, but the big issue seems to be the time he can give to concentrate on the tour.

There's 20 for you though - the existing 13, James, Neil, Luke, Joel, Josh, Billy and Tom ( with apologies to others not mentioned, maybe Farris next on the prospective list then Joe Salisbury, if he concentated more on singles, which may be doubtful, and the Grays ). Now they just have to all be in the top 500 together ...
