Great to see Northern Ireland through to France next year, joining England, and with Wales virtually certain to be there too. Add the Republic being in at least a play-off and be interesting times.

We in Scotland will watch it all unfold err stress free.

Should really have 32 qualifiers, 40 qualifiers, whatever

( OK, yes I may have previously suggested that really 16 is the best number ).

A fantastic achievement from the Northern Irish, although a big fan of Steven Davis having seen him come through the Villa youth set up, they have had teams in the past with big individual talents within them that didn't get close. For a country with a population of 1.6 million where football has a lower profile when compared to Ulster Rugby and even Gaelic for a significant proportion of the population an amazing outcome lets hope they can recreate the magic of 82!

Yess truly remarkable effort by Northern Ireland, quite emotional really, I remember 82 and 86, and believing that was the norm, for us as a nation, oh I was very wrong, so this happening 29 years on, comes close to GB winning the DC for me.

Ah yes, Scotland winning the Davis Cup I guess would help relieve tonight's ( really last month's ) woe for us ( not of course forgetting the help from that ringer Ward vs the US, which we kinda acknowledged by playing one of our home ties down in his manor ).

But yes re the Euros, again brilliant for Northern Ireland and Wales when they officially cross the line.

It's fortunate football isn't that big here either, our sports being tennis, golf, swimming, curling and shinty, oh and rugby union for at least a few days more

To be fair Northern Ireland have got a very experience set of premiership defenders and a very workmanlike team and Wales very similar with probably the best defender in the premiership, who does get recognised due to playing for one of the lower profile sides.

Well, Eric Dier supposedly gives great credit for his performance, and England's goal, to his father's career in tennis, as a player, and then in the sporting business.

There have been some outrageous quotes from the Russians.

eg,

I think England may be better served by not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.  It is going to be a interesting tournament.

Crazy behaviour. I don't understand exactly what they plan to gain, it is as if such comments are for domestic consumption compensating for a poor team.

FIFA's corrupt and flawed decision making is likely to make a total mockery of the next two world cups. English fans have made some heroic efforts to get to distant lands in the past but there are "no more heroes any more" and a fan going in 2018 at best will merely get robbed at worst "get an ice pick that made his ears burn".

On a happier note! I take that back, Iceland! 8% of the country turned up. Amazing! A country the size of Croydon and they were more than competitive with Portugal, may even get out of the group. Seen a fair bit of Gudmunson (no 7) in the championship and he is more than decent at that level. Austria, Hungry bring it on!!!

So, the England team demonstrated solidarity with the referendum result by immediately getting out of Europe.

I had the choice today of staying to watch Evo at Wimbledon or rushing home to watch the football. Fortunately, I made the right choice.
