I was just doing a quick check of career prize money for Murray vs Wawrinka * and something just struck me - has anyone ever seen a list of career ranking points?
It seems unlikely to me that anyone has ever bothered to do this but obviously it could have an advantage over prize money comparisons in that inflation and the disproportionate increases in prize money were taken out of the equation. There are many reasons why it would not quite be a fair model given changes in the structure of the tours and the ways ranking points are allocated etc. but if somehow you re-did the points historically so that for example the points for winning a slam in 1985 were the same as those for winning one today it would be very interesting.
It would be fascinating to see who had amassed the greatest number of ranking points ever on such a system (would be very interesting to see people's guesses on this subject) - though obviously it would not quite be accurate or fair given you would have to change the points from those they actually played for - e.g. you would have to make a judgement of whether a tournament got points as a 250 or a 500 or a 1000 tournament back before such categories existed on the mens side.
It could also lead to some interesting male-female comparisons!
I guess it would take someone with some proper computer skills/power/time to set up but would be very interesting. I wonder if a site like live-tennis.eu could do such a thing.
Has anyone ever seen something similar to this?
I guess this will end up as another dream of mine that I post about that will never happens (I feel most things I post about on here are those kinds of things ) but I thought it might lead to some interesting discussion points.
*(turns out that while they both have two slams, as suspected Andy has way more career prize money - over twice as much in fact having just crossed $40m).
Federer would surely be the winner by a country mile....

I've wondered about that too - it would be a lot of work and require a fair bit of interpretation for pre-2010 events but not impossible (for someone with a lot of computing power I mean - I'm not offering to do it LOL)
