Em has had two fabulous wins over Erika Sema (16 63 61) and, this morning, Hiroko Kuwata (64 63) to qualify for this event. She played exceptionally well this morning against Kuwata, including a ridiculous return game at 5-4* in the first made up of three drop shot returns (the first a clean winner, the second two resulting in immediate errors) to go up 0-40, and then maintaining her long standing second serve return tactic of steamrollering to the baseline (lately stolen by Federer himself) which under pressure caused Kuwata to throw in a double.
She only gets 6 points for her efforts (same as a $100k) which is a shame, and squares up against Kai-Chen Chang in round 1 tomorrow, who is ranked 151 and has won a huge number of matches over the summer. Sadly, it is on the unstreamed singles court, second on after 2pm local time (7am UK).
Also in doubles with Nao.

It ain't great is it. These mini WTA tournaments don't have quite the same interest in them as the full tour or the ITFs strangely. Lack of awareness? Not sure.
Anyway great to see Em carry on her rich vein of form.
Quite funny when everyone was saying she should step down a notch and play small ITFs and get some wins under her belt - the alternative, of course, is to step UP a notch and play WTAs and get some wins under one's belt . . .
I'm also assuming she will attempt qualies in the next two weeks in China and Japan if she can make the cut and if not step over to the 15ks in Bangkok

I think last year she did something similar. Playing India failed to qualify and turned up in the doubles in Malaysia(I think)
Em has done well in doubles with Nao, but a problem in pursuing with that partnership was the difference in singles levels with Em showing no desire to cut down on playing singles.
