Week 29 - Challenger ($50,000) - LG&T Tennis Challenger, Binghamton, NY, USA (hard)

QR1:  BYE vs (q6) Luke Bambridge WR 663 (CH = 503 in November last year)

****

QR2:  (qWC) Bernardo Casares (BRA) UNR (but a CH of 1232 in August 2011) or Graham Alrutz (USA) UNR vs (q6) Luke Bambridge WR 663

On the face of it, a good chance for Luke to reach the FQR, but there it could all go pear-shaped, as, in all probability, he'll face the q3, Nicolas Meister, &, as ever, the three points up for grabs in qualies go only to the qualifier. hmm

Yes. Meister not ideal. Too bad, as there are one or two very weak sections indeed. But on the other hand, Mr Bambridge has a history of beating some rather spectacularly higher ranked players, so who knows?

And an even bigger turn-up for the books in the main draw (not that I'm complaining, you understand! wink ).  Brits "bustin' out all over"  :

L32:  (WC/1) Kyle Edmund WR 113 (CH = 101 last month) vs qualifier

L32:  (6) Brydan Klein WR 175 (CH = 174 last month) vs qualifier

L32:  (PR) Ryan Sweeting (USA) UNR (CH = 64 in September 2011) vs Ed Corrie WR 227 (CH = 215 in October last year)

L32:  Freddie Nielsen (DEN) WR 268 (CH = 190 in August 2011) vs (3) Liam Broady WR 159 (= CH)

Predictions:

Kyle: SF
Liam or Brydan: QF
Ed: ???????

Hoping Luke can get through to the MD and avoid Kyle and Brydan!

Was wondering when Kyle would be back.

Would be nice to see Kyle and Liam have a good US swing and break into new ranking territories.

Unlikely Liam will go any higher than 150 this year he has too many points to defend consolidation inside the top 150-180 should be the target initially he would need to be getting to finals to move higher. Kyle has a chance to break the top 100 though and should do it.

Very odd doubles draw. Not complaining, but it's very odd - lots of byes, very few established teams and some quite unusual ones - Jarry/Fratangelo would be an interesting one on clay ... not sure what they'll be like on hard. Good luck to the Brits. Glad they ended up on opposite sides of the draw - would be nice to see a 3/4 Brit final!

Bambo wins the 1st set 6-3, served it out having been hauled back to deuce repeatedly in that 9th game.
Also worth noting Luke only won 5 points against serve in that set, but 4 of those came in the same game to earn him the break :)

Not so good in the 2nd set though. Bambo now *2-5 down, having saved 6/8 BPs
Hopefully the pendulum will swing back his way in the 3rd if he's unable to make any inroads in this set

1 set all now.

Luke's forehand is a real weapon but his backhand is somewhat out of synch right now.
