Maegan Manasse is a good US college player - her ranking is now 941. She played her first ITF in a year 2 weeks ago (25k) and got to the QF. Bit of a ringer.
Rankings are only indicative if the player is playing WTA/ITF regularly. 6 months ago Katie Swan would have been UNR. The American college tennis is much stronger than in the UK and they have no problems transitioning to WTA/ITF.
Stockton may be a bit of dump although Dallas Brayden loves it. There are however two elite college tennis programmes within an hour or so drive.
Manasse is a bit more than a decent college player being all PAC 12 first team, a conference containg at least 4 elite tennis programmes at UCLA, USC, Stanford and Cal ( the later just round the corner and Manasse's college) and ranked 4 in the NCAA which is a different league to say Mitchel Franks on the men's side who this time last year was decent but does not have the same pedigree. He gave Liam Broady a pretty tough summer, skewing the seeding and on occasions knocking him out in the early rounds. So when put in that context Naomi s loss having presumably just flown in is not quite so bad.
