LTA Strategy

Are most British ex-top 100 players not now coaches with the exception of the tv pundits? We must have quite a few of them? Jeremy Bates etc.

However, what it took to make top 100 perhaps 20 years ago, do we think that's wholly relevant to the current top 100? Today you have very different equipment, coaching methods, strength and conditioning, nutritional information etc. The average age of the top 100 has also risen by a few years. So what was relevant 20 years ago, perhaps isn't as relevant as Dan thinks?

Wouldn't the obvious answer have been to look at what Andy does and how his team goes about it and copy that? From memory he did get invited to Miami training blocks etc.

I don't read it as Dan making a policy statement, just an observation.
And probably with a slight, understandable feeling of satisfaction that he's had a whole load of bigwigs looking down on him for ages (and sometime quite rightly, to be honest) and now he's number one and top 50 and still on the way up, and most of them never came anywhere near.
I agree with those who say that a top player doesn't necessarily make a good coach (indeed, Jeremy would be an example ). The skills are quite different.
But an ex-top player garners a certain respect from the player and that can be important, just in being listened to. And we do have amazingly few....

are you saying Jeremy was a top player and isnt a top coach

Or is a top coach and wasnt a top player.

Or maybe in between on both fronts??! biggrin

I am giving him 'top player' status (although it's open to discussion but I'm a kind-hearted person )

He got to 54, I see, so that's about good enough to be a 'top' player - just.

But, no, not a top coach at all, IMHO.

ha. Add John Lloyd to that list - good player, top 20 ish, slam final (albeit AO) etc. but worst DC coach we had as far as I can recall!

He was DC captain, not coach. Annacone was the coach, I think: one of the overpaid, superstar coaches the LTA brought in to revitalise the British game. I think we lost five or six DC ties on the trot.

Thinking of Evans, I reckon Neville Godwin is the kind of coach that would make a perfect fit for him: solid ATP experience with good track record in upping performance; an ATP ex-top 100 player, active on-court as a coach, similar height, gamestyle to Evans and very smart tactically.

Didn't Godwin beat boris Becker at wimbledon once as well? Dan needs to start beating guys above him so someone who has done that might be useful.

Didn't lloyd bring to the captaincy that great idea of getting our six top guys after dan playing 2 or 3 days of head to head five set matches, with the aim of the winner getting the second slot. This was in the early part of the week before the tie. One went to 17-15 in the fifth.

I cant recall who got picked and how they did, it may have been james ward , but It certainly was different

I don't think Lloyd, bless him, ever claimed to be a coach - unlike some of these superstar types like Rusedski who were shipped in to trouser thousands for doing little or nothing.

As DC captain, he put on a dog and pony show at the NTC at a time when the LTA were showcasing their brand spanking new venue - complete with that farcical, sit in 'egg' device (remember that, anyone?) which our promised stream of ATP players could luxuriate in and recover in after their on court exertions. (All references to it on the internet now seem deleted: I'm not surprised).

Interestingly, John Lloyd's Davis Cup playoff tournament led to one of the longest official tennis matches ever when Chris Eaton beat James Ward. Eaton and Josh Goodall were LLoyd's eventual picks. I remember a raw but ****y Evans playing there as an 18 year old and standing out with his gamestyle.

That's right, your memory is better than mine! I recall there appeared a major flaw in the play off. Getting our guys to play five sets head to head , with their big domestic rivals meant it was all about getting the pick. Not about then getting out and winning a davis cup tie the next week. All the emotional focus was on that play off series and the players where spent the next week from my memory , although again could be wrong!

Article on the LTA website about the new Performance Academy at Loughborough University

www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2019/october/loughborough-university-national-tennis-academy-opens-its-doors/

Nick Cavaday is heading up the coaching with assistance from Louis Cayer.

Has Nick had much experience taking talented juniors to ATP top 200-300 level? The article says he has worked with Dom Inglot and Bedene (presumably when he was based in Herts) but neither of these experiences would convince me he is the right man for the job.

The other academy at Stirling Uni has the following team:

Pupils in Scotland will be based at the renowned Dollar Academy and will receive expert tennis tuition by a world-class coaching team led by Academy Head Coach, Leo Azevedo, who worked with former world No.1 Juan Carlos Ferrero and spent eight years as an Academy and head coach at the United States Tennis Association, supporting the development of a string of WTA and ATP top 100 players, including four world No.1 junior players. His team will include former GB Davis Cup player and current Fed Cup Coach Colin Fleming and Esteban Carril, the LTAs performance advisor to the Academy and a former coach to Johanna Konta.
