What on earth was going on in Paris today after the Federer match. Security just stood by and allowed a young spectator to wander onto the court, tap Roger on the shoulder and ask him for a selfie. Apparently more kids were following on court before the security reacted. Federer was clearly angry about it in his press conference and rightly so.
It did remind though me of a story of something that took place in Madrid this year. This story had a happy ending.
Kokkinakis was playing Tipsy in the FQR and they were at the start of the 3rd set breaker. A teenager of about 16 tried to run on to the court but was apprehended before he even got over the barrier. He struggled for a few seconds whilst the crowd booed and whistled until they realized that the young lad was "special needs" (hope that is the current politically correct term) and probably had a mental age in the low single figures. He just wanted to meet his idol.
He wasn't ejected and a security guard sat with him until the end of the match. Once the match was over, the situation was explained to Kokkinakis and at somebody's suggestion (don't know if it was the Kokk himself or security), the young lad was escorted across the court by security to meet his hero. He was clearly crying when he handed his hat over for an autograph, and as Kokkinakis tried to hand it back, the lad just gave him a big hug.
The situation was excellently handled by security in my opinion and Kokkinakis himself came out of it with great credit.
The French could learn a lot from this in terms of security.
