General election/politics

Apparently the commentators have also pulled out now - so they will not only have no presenter, no pundits, no commentators but have also said no player interviews after a few players refused to appear if asked.

So we will have a silent programme of pictures only which is faintly ludicrous. They could pop radio commentary over it but I suspect the radio commentary teams would also refuse to allow that.

BBC caused a rod for their own back here. Issue will be that its hard to see a climb down on either side now and Lineker can afford to walk away to more lucrative pasture , as could most of the pundits that appear. This could well finish off match of the day as a programme, and one of the BBCs flagship sports programmes at that.

As CD and others have pointed out, the BBC made a stance on this issue which was wrong and most would disagree with. Whatever one thinks of Lineker as a presenter, he was an independent contractor had the right to say what he wants. If the BBC dont like that , they should have not renewed his contract when due. Programme teams often get refreshed. But in this case, no one will want to work on it now and they could cause its demise.

The stance was wrong, the optics bad given the chairman situation and a big mess caused.

And the government , who hate the BBC, one of our greatest institutions, are probably happier than anyone about all of this. Lets give Boris Dad a Knighthood whilst at it, whilst he flies to Corfu or wherever breaking all the lockdown laws around.

The Government is a busted flush.

It won't be silent. They'll buy in commentary from an overseas broadcaster or use the world feed commentary.

I would respect these peoples principles a hell of a lot more if they had chosen to exercise them when their world cup went to Qatar.  The corruption, suppressive society to say nothing of the deaths of modern day slavery victims......they all went and all got paid for it.  They justified their actions because they "highlighted" it, a few even put on a rainbow coloured armband or knelt down......I am sure that told them.  And these same people who took the blood money are now getting portrayed as hero's by defending the right of tax evading, wife cheating horrendously overpaid Lineker to be able to criticise the Tory party.

Geez.....I think I'll focus on the tennis no

Lineker was told last year that the rules apply to him.

'"We expect these individuals to avoid taking sides on party political issues or political controversies and to take care when addressing public policy matters," the ruling said.'

And the relationship with Lineker was probably on thin ground anyway. But doing what theyve done alienates all the other sports presenting talent in one go and causes them a massive issue - mark chapman is probably the best sports presenter they have, Steve crossman as well and this stance has alienated those folks. Boycotting motd is one step, if they now sack lineker or rescind his contract , those presenters wont just stand by. Warning someone about what they say is one thing , but theyve got to be prepared to realise its a battle they will lose and have misjudged royally

Yes, but an expectation is not contractual - it's what's in the actual guidelines that counts, that's what he's signed up to

"talent"?

I was going to ask if anybody really cares who the presenters are, then I remembered that I stopped watching Today at Wimbledon when Balding started presenting it.

 Yeah

I stopped watching it when it became a 'daytime TV sofa' style chat show, rather than tennis

Although, tbh, what with WFH and the streaming services now, I've pretty much OD-ed on tennis by the end of the day during Wimbly weeks anyway no

Ok the argument over who is talented is completely different and ,  yeah, many arent. but talent is the generic title for front of camera staff so Im using it in that way. Most of the real talented people are, in sports at least, on radio IMO. radio five is a hot bed of the best the BBC have (youll tell me Im wrong no doubt !) but folks like Tony Livesey, Nihal Arthunayake , Claire McDonnell, Rachel Burden,
mark Chapman, Steve Crossman, and the commentators like John Murray, Ali Bruce Ball, Ian Dennis and into tennis like David Law, etc are for me the best in their games.

and of course they got rid of the best like Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, Steve Wright in radio 2 , which shows how dumbed down and silly the BBC has become.

But in terms of tennis, the BBC tv coverage is poor. Johnny Mac is a parody of himself and captures it all in one person.

Its now spreading - putting aside talented versus talent for a second. Alex Scott has pulled out of Football Focus for this week and the touted replacement, Kelly Somers, has refused to replace her. So its contagion and will possibly spread across other football and sports. BBC is in a right production mess here , and of their own making.

 The rules actually say:

If your work requires you to maintain your impartiality, dont express a personal opinion on matters of public policy, politics, or controversial subjects.**

... and I fail to see how, as a football pundit, his work requires him to maintain his impartiality on this sort of subject. He is not contracted in a political or public policy position. He has never - to my knowledge - been impartial on controversial subjects (like whether Leicester City are - or were - any good), but he has never been pulled up for that. Match of the Day presenters, even when they are popular with the great unwashed, aren't hired for their political nous. And it is up for question whether his original twit was a sign of impartiality, or an opinion - it actually seems more like a statement of fact.

Now chairmen bribing their way into posts is another matter but the BBC won't presumably be addressing that.

The guidance does say:

Actors, dramatists, comedians, musicians and pundits who work for the BBC are not subject to the requirements of impartiality on social media.

Presumably Mr Lineker isn't - despite appearances - a "pundit".

Jason Muhammad has now pulled out of final score. It looks like all bbc football programmes will be impacted badly today by the BBC badly mishandling this
